On each clipboard, behind a blue cover to protect personal information, were documents and charts for patients who had visited the clinic to receive a medication abortion that day.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00023b5vvmdx6cho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cStarting tomorrow, I will be making a lot less of these,\u201d said Buchanan, who has been working at the front desk for a few months.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00033b5vez4zv14p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Over the past couple of days, the Jacksonville clinic had been seeing two to four times as many patients as it typically would. But today, May 1, a significant shift in Florida\u2019s abortion law takes effect, cutting the 15-week ban down to a six-week ban \u2013 a time before many women\u00a0know they\u2019re pregnant.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo9nmgu00003b6lvkm5jrcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new restrictions will reverberate through the state and the broader region, as Florida has become a key abortion access point for the South in the years since the US Supreme Court\u2019s Dobbs decision revoked the federal right to an abortion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00043b5vdp1xx7z3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Buchanan is often the first person people see when they arrive for their appointments. Some patients who come in aren\u2019t familiar with the new six-week ban, but many are worried and stressed about \u201cbeating the clock,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel a sense of urgency, too. I don\u2019t want to add any stress to it. But behind the scenes, we\u2019re definitely making sure that they can be seen as quickly as possible and get where they need to go.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00053b5v7njhq5eq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Candace, a Jacksonville resident and 36-year-old mother of two, learned about Florida\u2019s six-week ban when she called A Woman\u2019s Choice to make an appointment for an abortion. She was within that limit when she had her appointment on Tuesday but worries about what it means for the future, including for her teenage daughter.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00063b5vkscd697l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI feel relieved to be able to get in, and I feel lucky that, you know, right now, I do have a voice, and I have a right over my own body. But waking up tomorrow \u2014 it\u2019s devastating. I know my daughter and myself are waking up tomorrow with less rights than we do today,\u201d she said.\u00a0The new\u00a0time limit\u00a0raises\u00a0fear in Candace,\u00a0who has experienced high-risk pregnancies and\u00a0traumatic births,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>including the death of a newborn.\u00a0Now, she worries that she\u2019s\u00a0at even greater\u00a0risk\u00a0since she\u2019s older than 35.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00073b5vv44do3hv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI\u2019m terrified,\u201d she said. \u201cMy life matters.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00083b5v3056yz8d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Candace said she would have preferred to get a surgical abortion but opted for medication abortion to leave space for the many women who may need to travel from other states.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b00093b5vjsgwp8ik@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last year, nearly 8,000 people traveled from out of state to receive an abortion in Florida, according to data from the state health department \u2013 that\u2019s nearly a tenth of all abortions that happened in the state and three times more than five years ago. After the Dobbs decision, nine of the 16 states in the South banned abortion. Florida now joins Georgia and South Carolina with a six-week ban. This leaves just three states in this US Census region \u2014 Delaware, Maryland and Virginia \u2014 where abortion remains legal past the first trimester and North Carolina with a 12-week limit.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/clvo90knv00003b5v3ryelgye@published\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-FcIQi\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000b3b5v7rhugcq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The crowded lots and farther parking distances have made their role extra important, especially as anti-abortion activism has also ramped up, said Ryan Moran, a clinic escort who has been volunteering for years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000c3b5v9fgyuumy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a struggle to try to cluster all these appointments before May 1 to get people the care they need,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000d3b5vshks4wti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Wednesday, at least a half-dozen anti-abortion activists\u00a0had stationed themselves behind the Jacksonville clinic, with regular trips up and down the parking lot, making beelines for parking cars that could\u00a0have\u00a0patients in them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000e3b5v60ad2a8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Florida\u2019s new six-week ban is a \u201clandmark for the pro-life movement and for women,\u201d said one person who asked to be identified as Wayne. \u201cToday, we see this as a victory for all women. It\u2019s not a victory for us in any way.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000f3b5v81jngs9m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            By 11 a.m. Tuesday,\u00a0the last day when abortions up to 15 weeks were allowed in Florida, all of the patients\u00a0who had appointments for the day at A Woman\u2019s Choice\u00a0in Jacksonville\u00a0were checked in,\u00a0and the parking lot was full once again,\u00a0with a half-dozen clinic escorts with big rainbow umbrellas and a sheriff\u2019s patrol car scattered throughout. The parking lot emptied a little slower than usual throughout the afternoon, as the busy day had the clinic running a few hours behind schedule.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000g3b5vldniqsrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Florida law requires that people seeking an abortion have an in-person visit for an ultrasound, lab work and meeting with a physician at least 24 hours before their appointment to receive the procedure or medication. Sometimes, patients wait weeks to come back for their second appointment \u2013 in some cases, it\u2019s so long that the lab work expires and the process has to start over again. But over the past couple of days, with the new ban looming, more patients showed up for their second appointments to be sure they made it in time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000h3b5vj5ow1tin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The last day before the new ban took effect may have seemed like business as usual. Up and down the clinic\u2019s bright yellow hallways dotted with inspirational quotes, patients waited behind closed doors for their appointments. They met medical staff in exam rooms or sat in leather reclining chairs with heating pads to recover.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000i3b5vhqr7o6hc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the work to get to that point has been months in the making.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000j3b5vid7bsafd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Florida Supreme Court issued the decision that paved the way for the six-week ban on April 1, just 30 days before it took effect. A Woman\u2019s Choice often schedules appointments a few weeks out, so alternate plans had to be made for some patients almost as soon as the decision was made public.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000k3b5vauepq7o2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            All of that coordination happens in the call center across the parking lot from the clinic, where a few operators answer a near-constant stream of calls from people trying to understand their options and schedule appointments across the five clinics that A Woman\u2019s Choice has: the Jacksonville location; three in North Carolina, where abortion is legal through 12 weeks; and one in Virginia, where there are no restrictions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5b000l3b5vk5itoqnu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Having this network of clinics in locations with different laws lets workers in the call center make real-time adjustments to help patients find the best option for their situation, said Gabby Long, the hotline director for A Woman\u2019s Choice.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000m3b5vev5esvo7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHaving that direct line makes it easier on patients,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you go to a place you kind of already know, you don\u2019t have to say, \u2018Oh, I don\u2019t know where to call. I don\u2019t know where to go. What is my next move?\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000n3b5vk1kj2e28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Communicating with patients about the new ban in Florida has been disheartening, but managing what it means for patients and how they might feel is nothing new, Long said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000o3b5vmsibtr22@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI feel like we were more prepared for this just because we\u2019ve seen so much change,\u201d she said. \u201cMy biggest thing was my girls in the call center \u2013 it\u2019s just humanity. Just be mindful of patients. Put yourself in their shoes. Because we know that our patients are stressed. We know they\u2019re scared. They just want to have access to basic health care. But there are always options for our patients.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000p3b5vbyow0vcp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sometimes, that option might mean coordinating care for patients at the Virginia location and helping them access abortion funds to help them make the 500-mile trip from Jacksonville.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000q3b5v8x1sozce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Virginia clinic just opened in February; it\u2019s so new that the address, just a few miles across the state\u2019s southernmost border, isn\u2019t yet included on much of the printed material that can be found around the offices.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000r3b5vlmp4d7mu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But opening that clinic was in direct anticipation of stricter laws in Florida and planning for it started \u201cas soon as we knew [state law] was being challenged,\u201d said Terry Sallas Merritt, an executive team member at A Woman\u2019s Choice.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000s3b5vr4s9xvds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Wednesday, when the new ban took effect, three patients who had their initial consultation at the Jacksonville location of A Woman\u2019s Choice learned that they were past the new gestational limit in the state and would have to travel out of state to get an abortion.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clvo7eirr001o3b5vd5iz56pc@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000u3b5vzp3pwzt2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThat\u2019s the majority of our patients. They don\u2019t know the exact time they got pregnant,\u201d Flynn said. \u201cIf they weren\u2019t previously [aware of the new ban], they are now.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000v3b5v5m94ktjl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The battle over abortion in Florida continues, as it\u2019s one of at least three states that have an abortion-related measure on the November ballot.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000w3b5vteenq5ex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But for now, the focus remains on individual patients.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvo6sp5c000x3b5v1e28nzg4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe are going to continue to stay open,\u201d Flynn said. \u201cThe biggest hurdle right now is just to get patients in the door that need an abortion, get their consent process started and then help them navigate the way to the option they choose.\u201d    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday afternoon, Mikenzie Buchanan scooped up an armful of clipboards piled behind the front desk at A Woman\u2019s Choice, an abortion clinic here; it was almost too many to hold.
