Provisional data shows 321,582 cases for 2023 and more than 94,000 so far in 2024, although the number is probably much higher.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev00053b6knocf7ckp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Almost half of this year\u2019s cases have been in WHO\u2019s European Region, with the highest incidence in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Yemen.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev00063b6kdn8r92zp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US has had 128 measles cases reported in 20 jurisdictions this year, as of Friday, according to the\u00a0US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is the highest number since 2019.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev00073b6k0yhol51u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, \u201cmeaning there is no measles spreading within the country and new cases are only found when someone contracts measles abroad and returns,\u201d the CDC says. However, the rapid rise in cases this year poses a threat to that disease elimination status, the agency says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev00083b6kvw06uxdi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Measles is a\u00a0highly contagious\u00a0airborne disease. It can cause serious health consequences or death, especially for young and unvaccinated children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev00093b6k6u0or67l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            General symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a rash of red spots. About 1 in 5 unvaccinated people in the US who get measles will be hospitalized, according to the CDC. About 1 in every 20 children with measles will develop pneumonia, and others may develop a dangerous swelling in the brain called encephalitis. Up to 3 of every 1,000 children who become infected with measles may die from respiratory and neurologic complications.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev000a3b6kc7j0hyk0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It can also lead to \u201cimmune amnesia,\u201d a condition that raises people\u2019s risk of other infections for weeks to years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev000b3b6kgv6audh7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            O\u2019Connor said Saturday that measles vaccination has prevented an estimated 57 million deaths between 2000 and 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev000c3b6k63fewyze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the US,\u00a0the CDC\u00a0that children get the first dose of the vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) between 12 and 15 months of age. Kids get a second shot between 4 and 6 years of age.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clvhbrndm000k3b6kth8gtnnz@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev000d3b6ktcx1o7ii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The vaccine is considered highly effective. One dose is 93% effective against measles, and two doses are 97% effective. Vaccinated people can still get sick, but it doesn\u2019t happen often, and typically, it\u2019s a milder infection.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvhbrkev000e3b6kgj6577tm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US has set a target vaccination rate of 95%, but coverage among kindergarteners has dipped below that in recent years.
