data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The United States Department of Agriculture said on Monday that it is conducting three separate beef safety studies.\u00a0The agency is sampling ground beef purchased at grocery stores in states where dairy cattle have tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus.\u00a0 It is also taking samples of muscle tissue from sick cows that have been culled from their herd.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvlb5uc6000p2e6au9oxewgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Finally, they\u2019re conducting cooking studies, which will inoculate ground beef with a \u201cvirus surrogate\u201d and\u00a0cook it to different temperatures to see how much virus is killed under each<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>heat<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>setting.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvlb5uc6000q2e6a4mrdravx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The move comes as one country, Colombia,\u00a0placed restrictions\u00a0on beef and beef products coming from US states where dairy herds have tested positive for avian influenza.    <\/p>\n<div US Beef Export Foundation said the restrictions \u201chave no scientific basis.\u201d\u00a0 The US is the largest supplier of beef to Colombia, accounting for about $40 million last year, the foundation said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvlb5uc6000s2e6anwl63vzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The USDA is testing beef with polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, testing, a highly sensitive lab test that can pick up even traces of inert genetic material from the virus, if any is present.\u00a0 Any positive samples will be further evaluated for live virus, USDA said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvlb5uc6000t2e6a1dhk3aqa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cUSDA is confident that the meat supply is safe.\u00a0 USDA has a rigorous meat inspection process\u201d and \u201cmultiple safeguards in place to protect consumers,\u201d the agency said in a
