The latest trends also suggest that medication abortion is a more common option than ever.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cltxjf2hj000j3b6h0ijcwh87@published\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-EIlM6\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw00063b6h0vs4m5p8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although abortions all but stopped<strong> <\/strong>in the 14 states with total bans, nearly every other state had an increase in the number of abortions provided from 2020 to 2023. As the geography of abortion care shifted amid a fractured policy landscape, the 10% increase in abortions nationwide meant that states without total bans saw a 25% increase in those years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw00073b6h1d4qwaj6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The \u201cdrastic loss of access in states with bans has been counterbalanced by monumental efforts on the part of clinics, abortion funds and logistical support organizations to help people in ban states access care through financial and practical support,\u201d the authors of the report wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw00083b6hq3mtwrmz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            States bordering those with bans had particularly large increases, but abortions also increased in other states where they remained legal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw00093b6hyhbhtifm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt is very possible that, while access was dramatically curtailed for people living in ban states, access substantially improved for residents of states without bans,\u201d the authors wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw000a3b6hsckcas42@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In addition to states policies enacted to protect patients and access to care and increased financial support from abortion funds, researchers from the Guttmacher Institute suggest that improved access to telehealth in recent years may have made medication abortion more broadly available.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw000b3b6hgqxq8nk7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Medication abortion has become more common than ever post-Roe, according to another new Guttmacher report. Nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the US in 2023 \u2013 an estimated 642,700 \u2013 were medication abortions, the report says.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cltxjilp1000l3b6hsaylbym3@published\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-Mb7cS\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxiy20100003b6hkxkkicmh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Medication abortion, also known as medical abortion, is a method by which someone ends their pregnancy by taking two pills \u2013 mifepristone and misoprostol \u2013 rather than having a surgical procedure.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw000c3b6h3t5u76k3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This option has become steadily more common over the two decades it\u2019s been available, rising from less than 10% of all abortions in the US in 2001 to 53% in 2020 and 63% in 2023.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw000d3b6h3zamiyg7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But mifepristone, the drug that was approved for abortion use by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2000, faces an unprecedented legal challenge. On March 26, the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that puts access to the medication at stake \u2013 even in states where abortion remains legal \u2013 and raises questions about the authority that courts have to overrule determinations by FDA experts about a drug\u2019s safety.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxj2p23000b3b6hwxgnouhx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Misoprostol can be used on its own for a medication abortion and is a safe alternative, but research suggests that using both pills together is the gold standard.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqw000e3b6hrmpn3y8i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Research has\u00a0long found\u00a0that medication abortion is safe and effective, but\u00a0another recent study\u00a0found that to be true even when the patient gets the medicine through a telehealth appointment.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cltxjemy5000g3b6hgsb7g0vn@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqx000f3b6hhexv3qc2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAny return to restrictions on medication abortion provision via telemedicine would be detrimental for people who either prefer or only have access to abortion using telemedicine,\u201d the Guttmacher researchers wrote in the new report. \u201cWhile the current court case only affects use of mifepristone \u2014 and a misoprostol-only regimen is also a safe and effective method of medication abortion \u2014 everyone seeking an abortion should have access to the full range of safe, effective options.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltxgllqx000g3b6hy5cgpphb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new reports from Guttmacher estimate abortion trends based on responses from a sample of abortion providers in the US.
