The change ends a strategy from earlier in the pandemic that experts said has been important to controlling the spread of the infection.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00002e67cxn9pjb3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The agency says it\u2019s updating its recommendations for Covid-19 to bring them in line with its advice for other kinds of respiratory infections, including influenza and RSV. Offering a single set of unified guidance will make people more likely to follow it, agency experts said in a news briefing Friday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00012e67phut01qj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Namely, the CDC now says people who have Covid-19 should stay home until they\u2019ve been fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours and their symptoms have been improving for 24 hours.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00022e67pl6tq4rx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After that, it\u2019s fine to resume regular activities, agency experts say. But they recommend that people take additional precautions for the next five days \u2014 including improving ventilation, masking and limiting close contact with others \u2014\u00a0to lower the risk of spreading the virus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7zhm2k00023b6hb2e5pyst@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            These enhanced precautions are particularly important for people who are around vulnerable individuals, such as those who are elderly or have immune function that\u2019s been blunted by medication or an illness, like cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8z3xaw000a2e676zah54wa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC debuted a detailed section on respiratory virus guidance on its website Friday.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clt8wsa2q00083b6hxb08zqy5@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"changing-impact-of-covid-19-in-the-us\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Changing impact of Covid-19 in the US<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00032e67lciperey@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen said the agency is changing its guidance because most of the US population has some immunity against Covid and, as a result, the country is no longer seeing large waves of infections, hospitalizations and deaths from the coronavirus.\u00a0Instead, these have turned into smaller, more predictable bumps in transmission in the summer and winter as the nation reaches a kind of steady state with the virus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00042e67mrpidth7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And importantly, the agency says, despite these wavelets of illness, severe outcomes like hospitalizations and deaths have been dropping since 2020 and 2021.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00052e671uzqsgzd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2021, at their peak, there were 2.5 million hospitalizations for Covid-19, and in 2023, that number dropped 60% to 900,000 hospitalizations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00062e67qdc6qsve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The decrease in deaths has been even bigger. In 2021, there were 450,000 deaths from Covid-19; in 2023, that number declined 83% to about 75,000 deaths.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8xsup900082e67i7b7395s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Covid has dropped from the third leading cause of death in the US in 2020 and 2021 to the 10th leading cause of death in preliminary data from 2023, the CDC noted.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00072e676v7m98j5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That\u2019s still a far higher toll than the nation typically sees from the flu.\u00a0In the 2022-23 season, which the CDC said was similar to some<strong> <\/strong>pre-pandemic flu seasons, the agency estimates that there were 360,000 flu-related hospitalizations and 21,000 deaths.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8sl1rx000a2e67xmc9gj65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cToday\u2019s announcement reflects the progress we\u2019ve made in protecting against severe illness from COVID,\u201d Cohen said at Friday\u2019s briefing. \u201cWe\u2019re in a different situation, but we must use the tools that work to protect against respiratory virus. That\u2019s why our updated guidance emphasizes some core prevention actions to protect against severe illness.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt90ptm000033b6h49dz7xsx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cohen emphasized that, first and foremost, people need to stay up to date on their vaccines.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8soddh000c2e672dn4voug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She said she anticipated that an updated Covid-19 vaccine would be available in the fall and that people should make plans now to get it. Earlier this week, the CDC recommended that people 65 and older get another shot of the current Covid-19 vaccine before the fall.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8sq9a8000f2e67uwfjyqhq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cohen noted that it\u2019s also important to stay home when you\u2019re sick, seek testing and get treatment to lower the chance of severe illness.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt91y5gf000a3b6hwtlahqic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC also noted that states and countries that have already shortened recommended isolation periods have not seen increased hospitalizations or deaths from Covid-19.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq00092e677djkzh8c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The announcement doesn\u2019t mean all viruses act the same or have the same impact, Cohen noted.\u00a0Instead, she said that having a set of uniform recommendations to limit the spread of respiratory infections makes them easier to follow and more likely to be adopted. Symptom-based recommendations also mean people don\u2019t need to test for infection, something many people already don\u2019t do.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8rv9t100042e676jwkpzp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn a recent CDC survey, less than half of people said they would use an at-home test for Covid If they had new cough or cold symptoms. And this is one of the main reasons that we\u2019re targeting this guidance to respiratory viruses and illnesses as a group,\u201d said Dr. Brendan Jackson, who leads respiratory virus response at the CDC\u2019s\u00a0National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8wlf0300003b6hmy3bavlw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC says its updated guidance will include specific considerations for people who are at higher risk from respiratory illnesses, such as adults over 65, those who are immunocompromised, people with disabilities or those who are pregnant or have recently been pregnant.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8wlyqq00033b6hdbcr9rgb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The agency also says the new guidance applies only to community settings. There\u2019s no change in recommendations to prevent the spread of Covid in clinics, hospitals and other health care settings.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8xi4oy00062e67fokr07l7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The guidance applies to common respiratory infections, the CDC said, and it shouldn\u2019t take the place of specific guidance for pathogens that require special containment measures, such as the measles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8s6meb00062e67dy5fedlp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Asked whether the change in guidelines might lead to more people being sick at work, particularly if they don\u2019t have paid leave, Cohen said she hoped employers would continue to allow and encourage employees to stay home when they are ill.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8sdoe500082e67udu6xcqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe think that options for remote work and paid leave opportunities are an important component of this,\u201d Cohen said. She also said she\u2019d like to see more employers offering Covid vaccines alongside flu shots in at-work clinics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq000a2e67vomsvnfp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe bottom line is that when people follow these actionable recommendations to avoid getting sick, and to protect themselves and others if they do get sick, it will help limit the spread of respiratory viruses, and that will mean fewer people who experience severe illness,\u201d said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, director of the CDC\u2019s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, in a news release. \u201cThat includes taking enhanced precautions that can help protect people who are at higher risk for getting seriously ill.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8wuvpq00002e67auk2i3d6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Daskalakis said that someone\u2019s symptoms return after they resume regular activities, they should start the precautions over.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8x5sxh00042e67k7f6sg21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo if people start to feel ill again, they go back to square one, which is, stay home until you feel better for 24 hours, or your fever has resolved if you have one, then add strategies, enhanced strategies, for five additional days so that you reduce the risk of transmission,\u201d he said at the briefing Friday.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clt8wpayf00063b6hs1gjvs3y@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"some-experts-disagree-on-guidance-change\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Some experts disagree on guidance change<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq000b2e6781r7uw6m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s reasonable to want to treat Covid-19 like other respiratory viruses, said Dr. Ellie Murray, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Boston University\u2019s School of Public Health, \u201cbut you can\u2019t just discard the science.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq000c2e67r88eeh9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s not good science. It\u2019s not good public health. It doesn\u2019t provide people with accurate information,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq000d2e67385dx6my@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Murray notes that we\u2019ve learned a lot about how respiratory diseases spread and how best to control them during the pandemic. But instead of applying those lessons to help protect people from other infections like the flu, she says, this rolling back of precautions is sending a harmful message.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq000e2e673hxlpdmt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s undermining the whole rest of the public health system,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause what people are hearing is, \u2018Actually, diseases aren\u2019t as bad as we\u2019d said they were, and we don\u2019t actually need to do anything. It\u2019s not actually that bad if some people die.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8pbtij00002e67yonnu7im@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some public health experts have argued that it\u2019s time to end \u201cCovid exceptionalism\u201d \u2014 treating Covid-19 differently than other respiratory infections \u2014 but others believe the move is wrongheaded.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mq000g2e674j9ckxnu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The five-day isolation period has had critics on all sides.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clt7z1qpo000o2e67ww9s0mh6@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mr000h2e6799yrimqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It was seen as onerous by employers in industries struggling with worker shortages, like health care and hospitality.\u00a0Some parents also considered it unnecessarily disruptive to school and child care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt7z08mr000i2e67d6n50sy5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At the same time, people at higher risk of severe infection<strong> <\/strong>viewed the five-day guideline as too short, pointing out that people often continue to test positive on rapid tests long after that and are probably still contagious while they do.\u00a0To them, the guideline has been inadequate and unscientific.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt8t46gq000h2e67l6p40ck8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think this is an effort to try to create guidance for the public that is easy to follow and that doesn\u2019t require a tremendous amount of thinking or referencing.
