The organization said it will take about three years for the guidelines to come together.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j3960005336hm99jq0ca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gender-affirming care is medically necessary, evidence-based individualized care that uses a multidisciplinary approach to help a person transition from their assigned gender \u2013 the one the person was designated at birth \u2013 to their affirmed gender \u2013 the gender by which one wants to be known.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt38cj4a0012336h3rzaj0hk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The society\u2019s current guidelines lay out the appropriate treatment for transgender or gender-diverse people, both children and adults. They describe when hormone treatment should be used and how the treatment should be managed. They<strong> <\/strong>standardize the terminology that professionals should use with patients and reaffirms the role that an endocrinologist should play in the patient\u2019s broader individualized care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j3960006336horhxy5rn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gender-affirming care is customized to each person\u2019s needs and can include giving advice for the person or for their parents if they are younger; providing mental health support; and, when a person reaches the appropriate age, prescribing hormones when appropriate. Most trans youth do not get hormone therapy, according to the Trevor Project, an LGBTQ youth-focused nonprofit, but some do. Some adults may also consider surgery, but surgery is not recommended for children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j3960007336h5rnhhhsf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The committee revising the guidelines has had its first meeting, said chairperson Dr. Joshua Safer. The last time the committee updated its gender-affirming care guidelines was in 2017; it previously revised them in 2009.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j3960008336h5q7kqygp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cTo be clear, we\u2019ve been following our usual guideline process that we apply to anything that we do, whether it\u2019s diabetes or thyroid etc., to transgender medical care,\u201d said Safer, a member of the Endocrine Society<strong> <\/strong>who also serves as executive director of the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery in New York. \u201cBeing the doctors in the room, we look at current data to give appropriate recommendations.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt39znu1001c336hxe7fd5qy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When the society updated its guidelines in 2017, the organization said there had been more than 3,000 publications since 2009, when it had done its last revisions, that clarified issues around gender and gender incongruence.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j3960009336hrsurgujg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The current committee \u2014\u00a0made up of Endocrine Society members and non-members who are a multidisciplinary group of gender-affirming care experts<strong> <\/strong>\u2014 will go through the latest science to determine the best specific approaches to provide appropriate care to patients. Safer said it will take about two years to examine the material and about another year for the revised guidelines to come together.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j397000a336hwu5uxn07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Other guidelines under the society\u2019s review include treatment for vitamin D deficiency, how to handle diabetes in pregnancy and management of primary aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone, which can have symptoms such as high blood pressure.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j397000b336hwcl26dhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although gender-affirming care has been restricted or banned outright in more than a dozen states,\u00a0with some conservative state officials labeling the practice as a form of child abuse, such care is considered the medical gold standard treatment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j398000d336he95a419b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Every major US medical association \u2013 including the\u00a0American Medical Association, the\u00a0American Psychiatric Association\u00a0and the\u00a0American Academy of Child &amp; Adolescent Psychiatry\u00a0\u2013 agrees that gender-affirming care is\u00a0clinically appropriate\u00a0for children and adults.<strong> <\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j397000c336hdvg85s20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When the American Academy of Pediatrics called for a systematic review of the evidence last fall, some people were initially concerned that association was backing away from the practice, but instead it affirmed its support.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt39t8dd0017336hqywi0v3f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Several European countries have adopted more cautious approaches, restricting the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and transition-related surgeries.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clt35lo5n000r336h9w3r6gza@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j398000e336h1svf92mg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than 1.6 million adults and teens identify as transgender in the US, according to the Williams Institute \u2013 about 0.6% of the population.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j398000f336h8oywhz7r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Safer said he understands that there is some political sensitivity surrounding the practice and that some gender-affirming care specialists have received threats because of their work. But he said he can\u2019t understand why this standard kind of care is seen as political.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j398000g336h8clyc1jy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe whole political conversation bewilders me,\u201d he added. \u201cBeing a doctor in a field that I think of is not political. I\u2019m just trying to deliver care to all folks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clt35j398000h336h96j48jax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDo we call it diabetes-affirming care when we treat people for diabetes?
