appointed vaccine advisers to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a CDC official with knowledge of the decision who wasn\u2019t authorized to reveal the information.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9e1yk000073b6ml3qgd1yp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The presenter, Lyn Redwood, is a nurse practitioner with experience in pediatrics and family medicine, according to a bio posted on Children\u2019s Health Defense\u2019s website, which notes she is president emerita of the organization. She previously served as president of the World Mercury Project in 2016, which \u201cexpanded its mission\u201d two years later to become Children\u2019s Health Defense, which was founded by current US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9e1yk100083b6mwcwkjpxz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Thimerosal is a preservative used in vaccines to prevent microbial growth, but it was removed from most shots decades ago because of concerns that it contains a form of mercury. Subsequent studies showed thimerosal &#8211; which contains ethylmercury, a form that\u2019s cleared from the body much more quickly than methylmercury, the kind found in some fish &#8211; wasn\u2019t linked to neurodevelopmental issues, including autism. Two of the new members served as expert witnesses in trials against vaccine makers, and a third claims, against evidence, that Covid-19 vaccines contributed to the deaths of young people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9e7gne00002e6bbzy1seq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most flu vaccines given to children now come in single-dose vials or prefilled syringes that don\u2019t contain thimerosal. Some multidose vials, which account for about 4% of the flu vaccines given in the US, still contain it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9effcp000a2e6becrruhbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Experts said they found the inclusion of the topic on the ACIP agenda puzzling.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9earqb00052e6b3svykhjd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI actually don\u2019t know any pediatric practices that even use that multidose influenza vaccine,\u201d said Dr. Sean O\u2019Leary, a pediatrician at Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado and liaison to ACIP for the American Academy of Pediatrics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9e1yk1000a3b6mwtyjqdyu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Redwood\u2019s scheduled presentation to the CDC vaccine advisory committee is unusual. Typically, presenters are members of the ACIP working groups who have spent months gathering and discussing evidence on a given topic. The vote on thimerosal was added days ago, and it\u2019s not clear what the discussion and vote on thimerosal in flu vaccines will entail.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9e1yk1000c3b6mdojl5mj8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Redwood\u2019s history with vaccines appears thoroughly intertwined with concerns about the safety of thimerosal and ties to neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, which multiple studies have since determined are not linked. Children\u2019s Health Defense, which describes its mission as \u201cending childhood health epidemics by eliminating toxic exposures,\u201d recently held an event called \u201cthe Autism Cover-Up,\u201d billed as an expose of a coverup by the CDC, the US Food and Drug Administration and others of a link between vaccines and autism. Redwood was a speaker about thimerosal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9e1yk1000e3b6mco9sq8jl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC says data from multiple studies \u201cshow no evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines.\u201d Nonetheless, the use of thimerosal in vaccines has declined significantly since the FDA in 1999 asked vaccine manufacturers to detail plans to remove it.
