It can come in the form of dirt, dust or smoke. Coal- and natural gas-fired power plants create it, as do cars, agriculture, unpaved roads, construction sites and wildfires.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt0006336ontltzpdv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Particle pollution threatens human health because it is so tiny \u2013 a fraction of the width of a human hair \u2013 and can travel past the body\u2019s usual defenses. When a person breathes these particles in, they can get stuck in the lungs and move into the bloodstream, causing irritation and inflammation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt0007336o46obvjud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Exposure to particle pollution is considered a significant factor in premature death around the world, according to the World Health Organization. Exposure can also raise the risk of conditions including certain cancers, stroke, asthma, preterm births, dementia, depression and anxiety.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt0009336objdoevgk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new report says that 85 million people in the US live in an area with a failing grade for year-round particle pollution, the second-highest number of people with such exposure since the report was first published in 2000.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000e336ojulu0hon@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The top 10 areas most polluted by year-round particle pollution are:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cm9rfzj4p0027336ozglujy7n@published\" class=\"list list--custom-indicator vossi-list\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list__item inline-placeholder\">                    1. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX              <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000f336o9bcprpmc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The American Lung Association report notes that people of color are the group most likely to live in neighborhoods with unhealthy air and are more than twice as likely as White people to live a community with a failing grade for two types of particle pollution or ozone pollution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000g336ow1id1yfw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People who identify as Hispanic are three times more likely as White people to live in an area with three failing grades for air pollution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000h336o51nkj540@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Juanita Mora, a pulmonologist who works in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood on Chicago\u2019s South Side, said she sees the toll of high air pollution levels nearly every day.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000i336o7w1d8r40@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The demolition of a power plant in the area in 2020 spread soot \u201cfor miles and miles,\u201d she said. When that combined with normal pollution levels, street vendors, other outdoor workers and a 7-year-old boy all came in wheezing and coughing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000j336omgf27ibe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHe was just outside playing in his yard,\u201d said Mora, who is also a volunteer spokesperson for the American Lung Association. \u201cHis parents had to rush him to the ER because he said he was having chest tightness and couldn\u2019t stop coughing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000k336oc2494kjn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs a doctor, I feel like we\u2019re failing millions and millions of kids and adults,\u201d she added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000l336o6ne32bui@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It doesn\u2019t always take a demolished building for air pollution to cause widespread breathing problems.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000m336onx3tojff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Katherine Pruitt, national senior director for policy at the American Lung Association and a co-author of the new report, said that a record number of warm days and wildfires during the research period caused \u201chorrible ozone years.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000n336olxfpudgt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People didn\u2019t even have to live close to a wildfire to be affected, Pruitt said. Smoke plumes travel, and when they combine with typical pollution in urban areas, \u201cthey bump up the ability to produce ozone-forming compounds,\u201d Pruitt said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000o336oqpixlmn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2023, Canadian wildfires caused problems for Mora\u2019s patients hundreds of miles away in Chicago. \u201cI saw so many kids and adults with asthma exacerbations around that time,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000r336obszz6xdi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Panagis Gallatsatos, a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, said doctors do what they can to help patients breathe better, \u201cbut we can only do so much against the air that they breathe.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000s336o1neyp6qd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gallatsatos, who is also a volunteer spokesperson for the Lung Association, said it\u2019s been \u201crather defeating\u201d to read about how many more Americans have been exposed to pollution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000t336o737g8s85@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs a lung doctor, I don\u2019t have any medication that can really offset that,\u201d he said. \u201cFor pollution, we rely on good policies and legislation to protect lung health.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000u336os0ee9c6u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And protective legislation may become harder to find. As part of the \u201cbiggest deregulatory action in US history,\u201d the EPA said last month that it will revisit the Biden-era National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Particulate Matter, which govern how much soot can be released into the air.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwt000v336o33m2gkov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Trump administration is also considering looser regulations on power plants, the oil and gas industry, coal plants and other industries and machines that generate air pollution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwu000w336o6e730c72@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cObviously, we\u2019re worried about what the future portends for all the hard work that we\u2019ve done to put rules and practices into place to control emissions, both for particle pollution and ozone and for greenhouse gases that are affecting the climate,\u201d Pruitt said. \u201cIt\u2019s very worrisome.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwu000x336oesk5t0e1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If EPA deregulation efforts are successful, Mora said, it will directly hurt her patients who are already breathing polluted air.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9rfkjwu000y336oc3mu8874@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI believe I\u2019m going to be seeing a lot more kids, more families affected by the lack of limits on particle pollution as well as ozone pollution, especially here in the city of Chicago,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you can\u2019t breathe, nothing else matters.\u201d    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air pollution levels keep getting worse for more people in the US, according to a new report, and experts say the Trump administration\u2019s proposed deregulation plans will make it even harder for people to get clean air.
