{"id":2167,"date":"2025-04-01T11:39:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T11:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/01\/the-lives-of-individuals-in-the-us-are-at-stake-researchers-warn-after-hhs-cancels-hundreds-of-vaccine-grants\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T11:39:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T11:39:22","slug":"the-lives-of-individuals-in-the-us-are-at-stake-researchers-warn-after-hhs-cancels-hundreds-of-vaccine-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/01\/the-lives-of-individuals-in-the-us-are-at-stake-researchers-warn-after-hhs-cancels-hundreds-of-vaccine-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The lives of individuals in the US are at stake,\u2019 researchers warn after HHS cancels hundreds of vaccine grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8rny3007626qf6iig1vdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As preventable infections like measles threaten to become endemic again in the US, researchers whose government grants were recently terminated are warning about the consequences of throttling studies looking at ways to increase vaccination.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj00042e6bbou61a6i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Among more than 1,600 grant cancellations announced by the US Department of Health and Human Service since January 20, roughly 300 have been related to vaccines, making the area one of the largest focal points for funding cuts by the agency.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj00052e6b90gxrkq9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a viewpoint published Monday in the journal JAMA, three pediatricians wrote about the letters they and their colleagues recently received terminating grants to<strong> <\/strong>research vaccine uptake, and they warned that \u201cthe lives of individuals in the US are at stake\u201d if the government continues to undermine immunization.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj00072e6b0uods3js@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Opel was part of a grant looking at ways to increase vaccine confidence in Alaska Native and American Indian communities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj00082e6bpg1iglmo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The letter he and others received said, \u201cIt is the policy of [the National Institutes of Health] not to prioritize research activities that focuses gaining scientific knowledge on why individuals are hesitant to be vaccinated and\/or explore ways to improve vaccine interest and commitment.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj00092e6bcesokl6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The authors point out that this is an \u201castonishing about-face\u201d for the agency, whose immediate past director, Dr. Francis Collins, had expressed regret that he and other top public health officials had underestimated vaccine hesitancy during the Covid-19 pandemic.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000a2e6b0kj8rzsw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The change in policy at NIH also runs contrary to views expressed by international health and security agencies. In 2019, the World Health Organization recognized vaccine hesitancy as one of the top 10 threats to global health. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a US think tank, has also stressed that vaccine confidence is essential for national security.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000b2e6bdp6cewrp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The authors of the JAMA paper say the loss of this critical support couldn\u2019t have come at a worse time. A recent study estimated that 1 in 5 parents in the US are hesitant about vaccines, just as vaccine-preventable infections such as measles and whooping cough are surging again.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000c2e6bdtcogb93@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt really makes no logical sense,\u201d said co-author Dr. Sean O\u2019Leary, a pediatrician at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000d2e6buwrebp4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe think of measles as the canary in the coal mine of vaccine-preventable diseases, because it\u2019s so contagious that it\u2019s the first one when you see immunization coverage in general drop. It\u2019s the first one you\u2019re going to see pop up.\u201d he said \u2013 and other infections won\u2019t be far behind.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000e2e6bq9cxi616@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US is also coming out of its worst flu season in more than a decade, with more than half a million hospitalizations and 23,000 deaths to date. Experts attribute some of that severity to decreasing flu vaccination across all age groups.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8xcvucd00022e6btnc13oct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            HHS did not respond to a request for comment on the viewpoint.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8xc4wd600002e6b419bcb2l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As a measles outbreak grows in Texas, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote in an opinion piece on Fox News this month that parents should consult with health care providers \u201cto understand their options to get the MMR vaccine\u201d for their children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8xcx1s500042e6b594dno5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy did not explicitly recommend the vaccine but acknowledged that it can protect individuals and contribute to community immunity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8xdr26000023b6mmrgw56o9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe decision to vaccinate is a personal one,\u201d he wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000f2e6bh4890t1u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The sudden loss of research funding isn\u2019t just disruptive, the viewpoint\u2019s authors said, it\u2019s also wasteful.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000g2e6bbya721l7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Co-author Dr. Melissa Stockwell, a pediatrician and chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Health at Columbia University, was studying the effectiveness of text reminders to increase flu and Covid vaccines for kids. The researchers had enrolled pediatrics practices and conducted a pilot last fall. They were going to run the campaign again this fall, to see which messages resonated and were effective, but now won\u2019t get the chance.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000h2e6b227rcmrb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey basically have invested nearly a million dollars already, and now we\u2019re not going to be able to look at the results,\u201d Stockwell said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000i2e6bujs5pwnu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat made it particularly devastating was that it wasn\u2019t only my grant, but it was this community of researchers across the country. \u2026 It was all happening to us simultaneously,\u201d<strong> <\/strong> she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8xdtcz400043b6mdnhs0ck0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Stockwell worries what that will mean for the health of children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000k2e6bbgvmw6ip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re trying to make sure families have the information that they need to make health decisions for their children,\u201d she added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000l2e6brp2y89mm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Taken in total, the vaccine grant cancellations signal \u201can endorsement of<strong> <\/strong>an approach to deprioritize science, no matter how fundamental that science is to the health of individuals in the US,\u201d the viewpoint\u2019s authors wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000m2e6b0zko6hsu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The grant termination letters stress that \u201cNIH is obligated to carefully steward grant awards to ensure taxpayer dollars are used in ways that benefit the American people.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000n2e6btr1udwqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But any short-term savings on research related to vaccines is likely to cost the US money in the long run, experts say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8x8twqj000o2e6b8if3d7aa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vaccines are the one of the most cost-effective public health interventions, preventing the direct costs of caring for people in the hospital as well as increasing productivity and longevity.
