For Aly, in particular, the recent nights away from their almost 2-year-old daughter, Alyssa, have been tough to stomach.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00063b6mwt71m5gk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe missed her first steps, talking and all of those milestones,\u201d Aly said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00073b6mjqvf193k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The reason is a cancer diagnosis that was given to Aly and Cody\u2019s 6-year-old son, Cailen, when he was just 4 years old. The discovery of the disease in Cailen\u2019s ear canal upended the Vela family\u2019s lives. After Cailen got through the initial treatment of chemo- and proton-therapy, the cancer came back last fall in a rare relapse.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00083b6my2vmz3nn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And now \u2014 on top of all of that \u2014 money that helps doctors and scientists across the country figure out a path forward for Cailen appears to be at risk.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00093b6mp5neicwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A proposal to slash the research funding distributed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as part of President Donald Trump\u2019s reshaping of the federal government and its spending was blocked after virtually the entire academic and medical communities across the country went to court seeking emergency help.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000a3b6m4ouykcio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But with a final outcome unknown, the Velas have been left wondering what bad news they might get about Cailen\u2019s future treatment.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm7jnarvy001m3b6mo9zqh9rh@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-new-baby-and-a-new-diagnosis\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A new baby and a new diagnosis<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000d3b6m0l9zdtxm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Aly was pregnant with Alyssa when she took Cailen for a routine pediatrician\u2019s visit in November 2022. The doctor thought he might have an ear infection. Doctors there, working in conjunction with a team an hour\u2019s drive away at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, drew up an initial treatment plan of chemotherapy and proton therapy. They also began biomolecular sequencing analysis \u2014 an examination of the disease at a molecular level so that doctors can be armed with as much information as possible about Cailen\u2019s specific case of cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000f3b6m24r8aees@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When Alyssa was a newborn, the Vela family brought her along to Ann Arbor and Royal Oak for Cailen\u2019s initial treatments. But since Cailen\u2019s relapse this past October \u2014 which required an 11-hour surgery followed by more rounds of chemotherapy \u2014 Alyssa has been mostly staying back in Muskegon with her grandparents. Siblings are typically not allowed to stay overnight at the hospital.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000g3b6m0xg2266r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And life will continue to be this way for the foreseeable future: Cailen\u2019s current course of chemotherapy runs through June.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000i3b6mqgdn599l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            All the while, the Vela family has no idea when their nightmare with the cancer might end. \u201cNot knowing whether (the cancer) is gone or not\u201d is one of the hardest things for Cody as Cailen\u2019s father, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000j3b6m5joixgiu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cody and Aly are among the thousands of parents across the country whose children are battling rare diseases. They depend on teams of doctors and scientists conducting pioneering medical research to get the best treatment plans for their children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000k3b6mclih2pny@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Doctors, scientists and medical advocacy groups say they are worried that much of the work they are doing \u2014 and the work that is still to come \u2014 could be seriously hampered if the NIH funding cuts do go into effect.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000m3b6msenzeiot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some others who work in pediatric cancer are even more blunt.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000n3b6mpaavc6kp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis will likely mean that fewer experimental treatments will get to children,\u201d Charles Roberts, director of St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital in Memphis, recently told the journal Nature<em>.<\/em> \u201cMore children will die.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000o3b6mg4nw5756@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The planned reduction affects \u201cindirect costs\u201d \u2014 payments not for the actual research but for the facilities where the work is done and other administrative costs (sometimes shorthanded as overhead costs). But those costs are a key part of the overall work, it\u2019s argued, with one research director saying the money was used simply to \u201ckeep the lights on at the university.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000p3b6mhujyoeu4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The NIH funds health research in universities and medical institutes across the country, with hundreds of projects targeting advances in treatment for a wide range of conditions and diseases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000q3b6m75j8fudu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Projects currently earmarked for funding include:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cm7jn8g6i001d3b6mzgur380a@published\" class=\"list \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">research in the University of Texas, Tyler, on a new way to treat breast cancer for those with a HER2 receptor that inhibits current medicines;<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">a study at Western Kentucky University of teenagers in rural areas to identify factors associated with persistent thoughts of suicide and allow resources to get to those most at risk;<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on whether removing cells associated with aging would reduce the development of diseases associated with aging like Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm7jna48o001j3b6m0x46p79a@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"working-with-unknowns\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Working with unknowns<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000v3b6m9toei2aw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Prensner said he spends the majority of his time in the lab and about 20% of his time treating children with cancer. Throughout his lab, he said, is equipment made possible only by NIH funding: specialized state-of-the-art technology that many universities couldn\u2019t afford on their own, safety features like air vents and radioactive rooms, animal housing facilities where new drugs are tested before being used on humans.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000w3b6mbbmxt2bs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Prensner is working on a research project aimed at trying to better understand the different forms of a brain cancer called medulloblastoma. It is precisely this kind of study, Prensner said, that can ensure that his patients are being presented with innovative treatments.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000x3b6mbjufpx0h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s really important to try to bring them together and draw inspiration from your patients in the lab and draw inspiration from the lab for your patients and how to advance their clinical care,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000y3b6mq6jg5rf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He\u2019s used to working with unknowns, but he concedes there is now another layer of uncertainty when speaking with some patients and their families.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam000z3b6mt5koj5iq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have had several families and several patients ask us: How might this work, will these funding cuts affect our treatment and affect what we\u2019re getting here? And you know, those are difficult questions to answer,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00103b6m8eo3zdat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The progression of Cailen\u2019s cancer is rare, and to hear Cody and Aly tell it, every decision about Cailen\u2019s care since the initial diagnosis seemed to require an army of oncologists spread out across the world consulting with one another. Cailen\u2019s surgery last fall and most recent course of chemotherapy treatment relied on a group of cancer doctors trading notes and analyzing the small number of past patients who have battled the disease and relapsed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00113b6mzju5govz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere were doctors from all over the country,\u201d Cody said. \u201cThey talked about possibilities of surgery being successful and being done, and then even talked about the different types of chemo plans that they should do afterwards.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7jn7aam00123b6mlnikev4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those doctors are no less than miracle workers in the Velas\u2019 eyes.
