Kennedy Jr. will undergo intense scrutiny over his history of controversial and inflammatory comments at his Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday to become President Donald Trump\u2019s Health and Human Services secretary.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb700043b6nrnetdeet@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy is expected to face tough questions from Democrats regarding his false claims that vaccines cause autism and his conspiratorial rhetoric on federal agencies and other health policies, while Republicans are poised to seek commitments from him over his positions on abortion rights and agriculture.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb700053b6n30xa9bzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Other more incendiary comments he\u2019s made in the past, such as comparing Covid-19 pandemic mandates to Nazi Germany and apartheid laws in South Africa, have also faced backlash from both ends of the political spectrum.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb700063b6npcv6yn9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy has also baselessly suggested that human-made chemicals in water systems could turn children gay or transgender. He has long peddled AIDS denialism conspiracy theories, alleging that HIV does not cause AIDS and questioning the \u201ctheology that HIV is the sole cause of AIDS.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb700073b6nmnzd0wru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most famously, Kennedy has in the past promoted the discredited theory that vaccines cause autism in children and that they are widely unsafe.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb700083b6n9akcmxsa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Routine childhood vaccinations are projected to prevent hundreds of millions of illnesses, tens of millions of hospitalizations, and more than 1 million deaths among people born between 1994 and 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb700093b6n4kh348io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vaccines are thoroughly tested before their release, and their safety is monitored on an ongoing basis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb7000a3b6nx2hllplf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As a member of the famed Kennedy political dynasty, Robert Kennedy Jr. built his career as a progressive lawyer taking on pharmaceutical companies and environmental safety causes. He later founded the nonprofit Children\u2019s Health Defense, known for spreading anti-vaccine misinformation. After he ran for president as a Democrat-turned-independent last year, Kennedy rebranded himself as a MAGA acolyte seeking to \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d and quickly endorsed Trump.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb7000b3b6niy6kq9mb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Trump rewarded Kennedy by nominating him to become the nation\u2019s top health official controlling more than a dozen federal agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the CDC.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb7000c3b6no4nwbfk2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If confirmed, Kennedy would command a budget of more than $1 trillion to regulate food and drugs, approve and recommend vaccines, and manage the health insurance programs that provide coverage to millions of Americans.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h3qmgo00093b6m5ux0x91a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A Kennedy spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. Here\u2019s a look at some of Kennedy\u2019s most controversial comments:    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6h14qer001d3b6nodhtzhiq@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"vaccines\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Vaccines<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb7000f3b6n6p9x2373@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy is perhaps most widely known for being an anti-vaccine activist and vaccine skeptic. Over the past 20 years in radio and media appearances, he made unsubstantiated claims that vaccines are inadequately tested and claimed flu and polio vaccines increase susceptibility to future flu strains and polio cases. He argued vaccines make people \u201close IQ\u201d and said the vaccine \u201cdominant narrative\u201d has \u201clittle proof.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zjb7000g3b6nk43rvyq7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNobody can tell you what the risk profile for any vaccine is,\u201d Kennedy said in 2019. \u201cSo anybody who says they\u2019re safe and effective is not telling the truth because they can\u2019t tell you that based on science.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0vpgi00003b6n57jn4zhi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy claimed vaccinologists add toxins to vaccines to amplify immune response. \u201cThey literally went on a search throughout the world looking for the most toxic things that they could find in order to add them to the vaccine,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zvju000m3b6nz1dnaptn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In vaccine safety, Kennedy frequently alleged routine disregard for vaccine injuries and a lack of understanding of vaccine injury among vaccinologists. In a debate with lawyer Alan Dershowitz in July 2020, Kennedy claimed that nobody knows the risk for any currently scheduled vaccines and that \u201cnobody can say with any scientific certainty that [the polio] vaccine is averting more injuries than death than it\u2019s causing.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zvju000n3b6n67z6esuq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He also added that public health regulators use \u201cfake studies\u201d to lie about the risk of vaccines, claiming regulators get together in \u201csecret meetings in San Juan at Simpson Wood and, and at headquarters destroying data, you know, data actively lying to the American public.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zvju000o3b6n86yqdaha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nevertheless, during a 2023 House Judiciary Committee hearing on the supposed \u201cweaponization\u201d of the federal government, Kennedy testified he has \u201cnever been anti-vax\u201d but merely an advocate for vaccine safety. He also said he was up to date on his vaccinations except for his refusal to take Covid-19 shots, adding that he had \u201cnever told the public, \u2018avoid vaccination.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zvju000p3b6nzm90fyko@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This was false. Two years earlier, speaking on \u201cHealth Freedom for Humanity,\u201d a podcast run by a nonprofit advocating for medical freedom, Kennedy encouraged people to join him in telling strangers not to vaccinate their babies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zvju000q3b6n8b0khe4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In July 2023, the same month he testified at the House hearing, Kennedy said in a podcast interview that \u201cthere\u2019s no vaccine that is safe and effective.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h0zvju000r3b6nx605b4am@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Despite this rhetoric, Kennedy has continued to insist that he is not anti-vaccine.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6h16ki8001g3b6nsxss2p03@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"covid-19\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Covid-19<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h000w3b6nglmbsmcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy\u2019s anti-vaccine profile rose during the Covid-19 pandemic as he made conspiratorial, and sometimes racist, accusations against the Covid vaccines and public health officials.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h000x3b6nv1mtmi8d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2023, Kennedy drew sharp criticism after falsely claiming that Covid-19 was \u201cethnically targeted\u201d to disproportionately attack Caucasian and Black people while sparing Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. Kennedy responded to the backlash in a video statement saying he doesn\u2019t believe the coronavirus was deliberately engineered but instead calling it \u201cproof of concept that you can develop bioweapons that will attack certain ethnicities.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h000y3b6n2gymzimo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy also pushed vitamin D as an effective remedy to Covid, stating that it \u201creally obliterates Covid\u201d and that \u201cwe\u2019ve known the effectiveness of vitamin D against coronavirus for decades.\u201d Kennedy cited that 78% of the people who died from Covid were vitamin D deficient and criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, for not creating a national stockpile of the vitamin and zinc.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h000z3b6nettrfdzw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He also accused Fauci of destroying repurposed medications like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin that also \u201cwould\u2019ve obliterated Covid.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h00113b6nqj2hazyz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy\u2019s stance on abortion has received less attention than other subjects, but it is likely to be the subject of Republican scrutiny.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6h17hit001l3b6ne64f15fr@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"flip-flopping-on-abortion-rights\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Flip-flopping on abortion rights<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h00123b6n3d6psymp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Prior to switching his Democratic presidential bid to run as an independent, Kennedy argued abortion decisions should remain solely with women during the first trimester and rejected government interference in personal medical choices.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h00133b6no08cr6ud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s nobody that\u2019s fought harder in this country than I have for bodily autonomy,\u201d Kennedy said in a May 2023 interview on \u201cBreaking Points.\u201d \u201cThere is no good option, but the only option we have is to let the woman make that choice. \u2026 Government should not be interfering.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h00143b6nx0fni64l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In other comments from his presidential campaign, Kennedy said in August 2023 that he would support a 15-week national abortion ban before saying he misunderstood the question from a reporter at the Iowa State Fair.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h00153b6npzwlesbi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Kennedy later backtracked that stance, writing in a social media post in May 2024, \u201cI support the emerging consensus that abortion should be unrestricted up until a certain point. I believe that point should be when the baby is viable outside the womb. Therefore, I would allow appropriate restrictions on abortion in the final months of pregnancy, just as Roe v. Wade did.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6h1041h00163b6ne1ycme0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy\u2019s opinions on mifepristone, one of the two drugs involved in a medication abortion, are not widely known, but GOP Sen.
