\u201cAs of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,\u201d Trump said during his inaugural address Monday, taking an early step to fulfill one of his culture war campaign promises. <\/p>\n
Titled \u201cDefending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,\u201d the order says that \u201csexes that are not changeable, and they are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.\u201d <\/p>\n
The federal government will also shift from using the term \u201cgender\u201d to \u201csex,\u201d and that sex is \u201can individual\u2019s immutable biological classification,\u201d a Trump administration official told reporters Monday. <\/p>\n
All government agencies will ensure that official documents, including passports, visas and Global Entry cards, \u201caccurately reflect the holder\u2019s sex,\u201d the executive order says. Also, departments running federal prisons, migrant shelters, rape shelters and other \u201cintimate spaces\u201d will be directed to protect single-sex spaces for privacy. And employee records will also adhere to the executive order, as will federal departments\u2019 messaging. <\/p>\n
\u201cAgencies are no longer going to promote gender ideology through communication forms and other messages,\u201d the official said, adding that grants and contracts will be reviewed to ensure that \u201cfederal funds shall not be used to promote gender ideology.\u201d <\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s executive order will dismantle efforts by the Biden administration to be more inclusive of Americans\u2019 gender identification. <\/p>\n
As of 2022, US citizens have been able to select \u201cX\u201d as their gender marker on passports. One\u2019s marker does not need to match the gender on citizenship documents or photo ID, nor is medical documentation needed to change one\u2019s gender, according to the State Department. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe promote the freedom, dignity, and equality of all people \u2013 including LGBTQI+ individuals,\u201d the department\u2019s website says. \u201cWe are demonstrating this commitment to better serve all U.S. citizens, regardless of gender identity.\u201d <\/p>\n
Later that year, Americans were able to start changing their sex identification with the Social Security Administration without needing to provide medical certification. However, Social Security\u2019s record systems still require a designation of male or female, though the administration said it was exploring policy and systems updates to support an \u201cX\u201d designation. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Social Security Administration\u2019s Equity Action Plan includes a commitment to decrease administrative burdens and ensure people who identify as gender diverse or transgender have options in the Social Security number card application process,\u201d said Kilolo Kijakazi, the administration\u2019s acting commissioner at the time. <\/p>\n
