The nutrition label on the back of products would remain and complement the information on the front of the label.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5woxdtz00003b6mx61sionw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A few different design options were tested in a representative sample of US adults to see which type of packaging allowed consumers to make \u201cquicker and more accurate assessments\u201d of products, the agency said, and the proposed option performed best in most cases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5woxuu100023b6m3zfyiznr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cParticipants provided more correct answers regarding the helpfulness of the product than the other schemes tested and also spent significantly less time evaluating the nutrient profile of the product,\u201d Dr. Robin McKinnon, acting director for the FDA\u2019s Nutrition Center of Excellence, said at a news briefing Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5wp97ju00053b6mtjg3160y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Products that contain at least 20% of the daily value of a nutrient would be considered to have \u201chigh\u201d levels, 5% or less would be \u201clow,\u201d and the \u201cmedium\u201d category would capture the rest.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5wnu8q400033b5z23ymw4al@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The agency said that 60% of Americans have at least one chronic disease such as heart disease and diabetes and that the \u201cexcess consumption of saturated fat, sodium and added sugars\u201d is a major contributing factor.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5wnu8q400043b5z0xfx9642@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe science on saturated fat, sodium and added sugars is clear,\u201d FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said in a statement. \u201cNearly everyone knows or cares for someone with a chronic disease that is due, in part, to the food we eat. It is time we make it easier for consumers to glance, grab and go. Adding front-of-package nutrition labeling to most packaged foods would do that. We are fully committed to pulling all the levers available to the FDA to make nutrition information readily accessible as part of our efforts to promote public health.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5wnu8q400053b5zf1ltxi63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Comments on the proposal are open through May 16.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5wsk4vk00003b5z3kun5bx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H.
