Advisories are uncommon and reserved for issues that need immediate awareness and action. They often become turning points in the nation\u2019s health habits. A 1964 surgeon general\u2019s report on smoking, for example, started to change the perception that cigarettes were benign.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h2onnr000n2e6banfpw8r9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new advisory may help do the same for drinking, which was once thought to be associated with some health benefits. The new report aims to dispel any notion that alcohol is harmless.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie0004356m8utvuoto@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAlcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer responsible for about 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States \u2013 greater than the 13,500 alcohol-associated traffic crash fatalities per year in the US \u2013 yet the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk,\u201d Murthy said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/related-content\/instances\/cm5gu50jt00013b6mmyjadv94@published\" data-component-name=\"related-content\" class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--article\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width__image image__related-content\">            <\/div>\n<p class=\"related-content_full-width__headline\">            <span class=\"related-content_full-width__title-text\" data-editable=\"content.title\">Related article<\/span>      <span class=\"related-content_full-width__headline-text\" data-editable=\"content.headline\">Alcohol use increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. A new study shows that it\u2019s still high<\/span>    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h1nvl700002e6bllzdnzlu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Roughly 70% of Americans consume alcohol, according to Dr. Brian P. Lee, a liver specialist at Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California who researches the health effects of alcohol, and many are confused about whether an occasional drink is good or bad for them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h28j92000h2e6bazfvchgt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Only 45% of Americans surveyed by the American Institute for Cancer Research in 2019 said they believed that drinking alcohol causes cancer, the new advisory notes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h1yis400082e6bcy7wxs9r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA lot of confusion comes from prior studies that really weren\u2019t as robust and based on methodology that probably isn\u2019t as accurate,\u201d Lee said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h1y9q700052e6b3b6y1g5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new surgeon general\u2019s report is more in tune with modern evidence, Lee said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h23f8h000e2e6byavpp08x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cEven light drinking \u2026 really, there\u2019s no benefit, and in fact, there may be harm,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie0005356m375bllad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol is the third-leading preventable cause of cancer in the US, the new advisory says, after tobacco and obesity. It notes that the link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk is well-established for at least seven types of cancer: breast, colorectal, esophagus, liver, mouth, throat and voice box. And the risk remains regardless of what type of alcohol is consumed, and it increases with greater consumption.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie0006356m3sxrbgx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Increasingly, evidence has mounted against alcohol consumption because of its health risks, negating a decades-long perception that some alcohol \u2013 especially red wine \u2013 could benefit health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie0007356m7ar7s864@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Still, nuances persist: A report in December from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that moderate drinking \u2013 two drinks a day or fewer for men and one for women \u2013 may be associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease. It also found that moderate drinking was associated with a higher risk of certain types of cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h44r49000x2e6bajjv14yd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere was actually a time when we thought red wine increases risk of some cancers, but the positive effects for cardiovascular disease overwhelm the negative effects for cancer,\u201d said Dr. Otis Brawley, an oncologist at Johns Hopkins University and former chief medical and scientific officer for the American Cancer Society.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h4a3ic00172e6beh3niw9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Over the past three years, however, a steady stream of scientific evidence and comprehensive research reviews have disproved that idea.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h4png0001d2e6bh2issjhl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPeople need to be warned,\u201d Brawley said. \u201cThere is no safe amount of alcohol.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h51kij001t2e6biccapzdo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol causes cancer in at least four ways, the advisory notes. It is metabolized into a chemical called acetaldehyde, which damages DNA. Damaged DNA can then cause cells to divide out of control, leading to cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h563cb001w2e6bkas37wu5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cFor those sites where there is direct contact \u2026 this is clearly the mechanism,\u201d said Dr. B\u00e9atrice Lauby-Secretan, head of the Handbooks Programme at the International Agency of Cancer Research, or IARC. Those sites include the mouth, esophagus, stomach and colon, she added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h6mkt8003e2e6bd4or9yq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A recent IARC report found that about 20% of the nearly 75,000 lip and mouth cancers diagnosed worldwide each year are caused by drinking alcohol, for example.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h5btfa001z2e6bdsffbgti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol also creates unstable molecules called free radicals that can damage DNA and lead to cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h5hui700222e6b4535xkbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It alters levels of hormones, like estrogen and testosterone, which increases cancers at hormone-sensitive sites like the breast and prostate.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/related-content\/instances\/cm5h054iv00013b6myhwamf7e@published\" data-component-name=\"related-content\" class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--article\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width__image image__related-content\">            <\/div>\n<p class=\"related-content_full-width__headline\">            <span class=\"related-content_full-width__title-text\" data-editable=\"content.title\">Related article<\/span>      <span class=\"related-content_full-width__headline-text\" data-editable=\"content.headline\">Worried about your drinking? Check out our Dry January advice<\/span>    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h5uv20002o2e6bhpqdip0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol also depletes levels of important nutrients, such as B vitamins and folate, that help protect the body against cancer, said Dr. Shuji Ogino, a professor of epidemiology and pathology at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h5k8u800252e6bj8t7ffk5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol is a powerful solvent too, so when it comes into contact with other carcinogens like cigarettes, it extracts higher levels of cancer-causing substances from those products and potentiates their effects. That makes it an especially dangerous companion for any kind of tobacco product, including smokeless tobacco.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h5snzm002l2e6bp2vdhonr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s no longer two plus two equals four. It\u2019s two plus two equals six,\u201d Lauby-Secretan said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie0008356m76536joq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For cancers like those of the breast, mouth and throat, the risk may start to develop with one or fewer drinks per day, the surgeon general\u2019s office said. It also noted that any individual\u2019s cancer risk is influenced by a number of factors, including their own biology and environment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h4xnvr001k2e6bl7av3ar1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol increases cancer risk for both sexes, but the risks of drinking are higher for women than for men.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h33qzk000q2e6brxq4a74m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A woman who lives to be 80 years old has a roughly 17% chance of developing an alcohol-related cancer over the course of her lifetime, even if she drinks less than one drink per week, the report notes. That risk rises with the amount of alcohol consumed. With one drink a day, women have a 19% risk of developing an alcohol-related cancer, and there\u2019s a nearly 22% risk of developing an alcohol-related cancer with two drinks a day.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h3iw4w000u2e6b8nhlyyd0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For men, those same risks are 10% for less than one drink a week, 11% for one drink a day and 13% risk at two daily drinks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h4xznt001n2e6bg0k9vj8o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There are several reasons why women are more vulnerable to alcohol-related cancers. Body size is one factor. Women are generally smaller, \u201cso at the same quantity of alcohol use, you have higher blood levels and exposure of each cell in your body to alcohol,\u201d Lee said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h4z7v3001q2e6b9u0ynrkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alcohol also interacts with body fat, which women tend to have more of than men, and disrupts hormonal balance, which can spur the development of cancers of the breast and prostate, Lee said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h5yl6s002s2e6br7aofqzb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Doctors said they were pleased to see the new advisory.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h4pstd001h2e6bsx6g7u1m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI was very excited about this report,\u201d said Dr. David Greenberg, chief of hematology and oncology at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center. \u201cI\u2019ve been kind of harping on this for a few years now.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h6cqdj00322e6byczhagaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cit\u2019s remarkable how many of my family and friends and patients are just not aware of how dangerous and toxic alcohol can be,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h690kl002z2e6bqkmwwd2m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Greenberg said he\u2019s a drinker but watches his consumption. He\u2019s doing \u201cdry January,\u201d a social movement to encourage abstinence from alcohol for the first month of the year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h6e9k800352e6b2xda1b91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf you play it by the book, you shouldn\u2019t drink any alcohol, because it\u2019s all toxic,\u201d he said, but he also tells his patients that abstaining completely isn\u2019t very realistic or fun.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h6fkd300382e6beo896z0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf you\u2019re going to drink, it should be done very moderately and not that frequently,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h6kt7s003b2e6blsc5ozc4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Surveys show that certain groups are getting the moderation message. Younger adults were most likely to say drinking is bad for health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie000a356miqh5ok76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The surgeon general\u2019s advisory also calls for guideline limits for alcohol consumption to be assessed to account for cancer risk, and seeks to raise awareness for individuals about the link to cancer risk as they decide whether and how much to drink.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h6xwak003h2e6beu1y31y2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI 100% agree with this, and there should be a warning label,\u201d Ogino said. \u201cIt should have happened a little bit earlier,\u201d he said, but better late than never.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5gtn0ie000b356m6ei6uh3p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            An updated warning label on alcoholic beverages to reflect cancer risk would require approval from Congress. The currently required warning says that women shouldn\u2019t drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy and that consuming alcohol impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems. The advisory points out that it \u201chas remained unchanged since its inception in 1988.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h7bbqf0000356m1b2evyem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The current warning \u201chas long informed consumers about the potential risks of the consumption of alcohol,\u201d Dr. Amanda Berger, senior vice president of science and research at the Distilled Spirits Council, said in a statement Friday. \u201cMany lifestyle choices carry potential risks, and it is the federal government\u2019s role to determine any proposed changes to the warning statements based on the entire body of scientific research.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5hd8pvl00042e6b08pv3wz4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDoctors and nurses can play a role in educating patients about this.
