For example, it doesn\u2019t cure or treat asthma, allergy or lactose intolerance, and it doesn\u2019t have the good gut bacteria that could improve your microbiome.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9p2nk001j356mweldb1qw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPasteurization is meant to ensure the bad bacteria that can be harmful to people and make them ill are killed,\u201d said Dr. Rabia de Latour, a gastroenterologist at NYU\u2019s Grossman School of Medicine. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of recent attention being paid to the concept of \u2018processed\u2019 foods being bad for your health. [Pasteurization] still provides some protein and aids in bone health by providing calcium and vitamin D to the drinker, but if you\u2019re very concerned about your microbiome, I believe there are safer ways to enhance it.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9panx001m356mjt9sftwq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some ways to improve your gut microbiome include consuming high-fiber and fermented foods, fruits, vegetables and extra virgin olive oil.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4d9q0v7001v356mqe48fho3@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-are-the-risks-of-drinking-raw-milk\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What are the risks of drinking raw milk?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9puqe001s356mvv78yqvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Raw milk has a neutral pH and substantial nutritional and water content, making it an ideal environment for bacteria and other harmful pathogens to grow., research shows.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9q507001y356mrh1gkjnx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMilk has around 87% moisture, and microbes love more moisture,\u201d said Alex O\u2019Brien, the food safety and quality coordinator at the Center for Dairy Research. \u201cThe more available water, the easier it is for them to grow.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9qaj40021356mvhjf9tgx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC says that drinking or eating products made from raw milk opens the door to several harmful germs, including E. coli, listeria, salmonella and brucella. Another, Cryptosporidium, can lead to very dangerous diarrhea in people who have HIV or AIDS, de Latour says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9qeq10024356mf1og356t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            These foodborne illnesses can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting. In rare cases, they may lead to serious conditions like Guillain-Barr\u00e9 or hemolytic uremic syndrome. Dr. Don Schaffner, a food science professor at Rutgers University, said the health risk from raw milk cheeses may be significantly lower, depending on the type of cheese.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9sib5002k356mvc0z4d2n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hard aged raw milk cheeses like cheddar, Asiago, Parmesan or Swiss are much less risky than soft raw milk cheese like queso fresco, feta, Camembert or Brie, Schaffner said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9su51002q356mhhv6uto9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSoft raw milk cheeses are not aged \u2026 and probably pose about the same level of risk as raw milk itself,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9svd6002s356muft994ba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC says that soft cheeses with a high moisture content are more likely to be contaminated with listeria bacteria.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9t1e0002w356m9aqx9pkv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s salt that\u2019s added to cheeses, and there is rennet and other additives that make the cheese curdle the milk,\u201d Hallman said. \u201cThat aging process and the addition of salt can basically reduce the risk of pathogens. It doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s risk-free, which is why if you are pregnant or immunocompromised or an older individual, consuming raw milk cheeses can be somewhat risky.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4d9tu1s0035356mq1b8r3cq@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"why-we-pasteurize-milk\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Why we pasteurize milk<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9tkuh0032356m8cimavyd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US Public Health Service created the Standard Milk Ordinance in 1924 to promote pasteurization practices and remove harmful bacteria that could cause typhoid and scarlet fevers as well as tuberculosis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9twwj0038356m1lblh07h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The ordinance, now known as the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, outlines the requirements for lab testing of milk and dairy products for quality and safety.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9u1im003b356mf2t4a8ui@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Experts estimate that, before the wider adoption of this approach, roughly 25% of all disease outbreaks in the US were milk-borne.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9u6kv003e356m367kv6yq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to the FDA, for every 2 billion servings of pasteurized dairy products consumed in the US, about one person becomes ill.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9v82h003h356muyp62voh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pasteurization \u201chas been incredibly effective at reducing the incidents of milk-borne disease,\u201d Schaffner said. \u201cAny biological organism has optimal conditions that it prefers, and if those deviate, organisms are inactivated. Heat is a very straightforward technology that is easy to apply with precision, and its effect on pathogenic microorganisms is well known.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9vfj5003k356m236j6yuk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some health experts believe that people may continue to consume raw milk despite the health risks because they believe that the overall chance of illness is low.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9w2ya003n356ml1xknz74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSome people are extremely optimistic, and they believe that if there are risks, they are more likely to be much more likely to apply to other people,\u201d Hallman said. \u201cIn this case, they may be focusing primarily on the health benefits and ignoring the risks because it\u2019s more convenient to do that. They underplay the risks by overemphasizing the benefits to justify the choice they\u2019ve made.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4d9we00003s356mi996zy04@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-raw-milk-controversy\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        The raw milk controversy<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9waaj003q356mshnp8p49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Raw milk has become a particularly hot topic because of Kennedy\u2019s vocal support as well as endorsements from social media influencers and the \u201cGwyneth Paltrows of the world,\u201d Hallman said. Paltrow has said she drinks raw cream in her coffee.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4d9wt05003v356mihlidia0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe evidence for these health benefits is certainly not definitive, whereas the risks certainly are definitive,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving worked on a farm and been around cattle, I can pretty much assure you that everything is not sterile around those animals.
