{"id":1787,"date":"2024-12-12T11:40:26","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T11:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/12\/most-women-in-the-us-arent-accessing-family-planning-services-even-as-abortion-restrictions-grow\/"},"modified":"2024-12-12T11:40:26","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T11:40:26","slug":"most-women-in-the-us-arent-accessing-family-planning-services-even-as-abortion-restrictions-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/12\/most-women-in-the-us-arent-accessing-family-planning-services-even-as-abortion-restrictions-grow\/","title":{"rendered":"Most women in the US aren\u2019t accessing family planning services, even as abortion restrictions grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j32nxa000j26oydti9co8i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most women in the United States haven\u2019t received birth control prescriptions or other family planning services in recent years, a new report suggests, even as abortion restrictions have grown.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t600063b6mnt9tuo8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Family planning \u2013 including birth control, emergency contraception, sterilization and counseling for these services \u2013 is an important part of health care, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j3q78n00013b6mjmzfxe0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            These visits are sometimes the only interaction women have with the health care system, and inadequate access can lead to poor health outcomes. Some research also suggests that family planning services help prevent more than 1.5 million unintended pregnancies in the US each year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t600083b6muznzbrr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But in 2022 and 2023, only about a third of women of reproductive age \u2013 35.7% \u2013 had received family planning services in the previous 12 months, according to survey data published in a report by the CDC on Wednesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j3qoyk00053b6mlll772vq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It was during this time, in June 2022, that the US Supreme Court\u2019s Dobbs decision revoked the federal right to an abortion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t600093b6mm15nnwum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alabama is one of more than a dozen states that have banned nearly all abortions since the Dobbs decision. The new state law meant the West Alabama Women\u2019s Center \u2013 now known as WAWC Healthcare \u2013 would have to pivot, and Executive Director Robin Marty knew that if her center had to stop providing abortions, she wanted to shift the focus to family planning services.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000a3b6m1zgmv1qp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen we were doing abortion, we learned that a lot of the patients who were coming in to us were coming in because they had gotten pregnant because they couldn\u2019t access any form of birth control,\u201d Marty said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000b3b6m6zivkpzq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen you\u2019re someone who supports a person\u2019s decision to have bodily autonomy, when you believe that a person should be able to decide when and if they want to have a child, then you support that at every point in their reproductive lives.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000c3b6m8tqj8m0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            WAWC is one of 76 independent abortion clinics across the country that have had to close or stop providing abortion care since the Dobbs decision in 2022, according to a new report from the Abortion Care Network. Now, 14 states have no clinics providing abortion care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000d3b6m5sb1nxmh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The vast majority of the patients WAWC serves are uninsured, and it was just as difficult for them to get contraception as it was to get abortions, Marty said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000e3b6mz1sv3nq5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And the new CDC report shows vast inequities among women who receive family planning services, particularly by race and income.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000f3b6m4ok71apz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nearly 40% of White women had received any family planning services in the year before they were surveyed, compared with about 35% of Black women and 32% of Hispanic women, according to the survey data from 2022 and 2023. About 27% of White women said they had gotten some form of birth control in the previous year, compared with 21% of Black women and 20% of Hispanic women.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000g3b6mc4gqu9wm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The rate of women accessing family planning services increased with family income and with higher levels of education, the report shows.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000h3b6m7tjqzn1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Changes to survey methods make it difficult to compare how likely women are to use family planning services now to earlier years, according to the CDC. But other recent research has found that women in states with the most restrictive abortion laws have also become less likely to access prescription birth control, and there are some indications that rates of emergency contraception use and sterilization may have increased compared with pre-Dobbs years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000i3b6mq886gqp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Overall, a birth control prescription or other contraception method was the most commonly accessed family planning service, with about 24% of women ages 15 to 49 reporting that they had received it, according to the new CDC report. Nearly 4% received emergency contraception, and about 3% received counseling for sterilization, along with 1.6% of women who said they had the operation in the previous 12 months.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000j3b6m2lzuuv24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Efforts to expand access to family planning services continue.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000k3b6m0vuscxxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Opill, the first nonprescription daily oral contraceptive approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, became available in the US this spring.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j3zrcu00023b6mmnsp21jd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Growing awareness and interest \u201cunderscores the need for access to safe and effective daily birth control,\u201d said Schmelter, who is also president of Perrigo\u2019s Consumer Self-Care Americas, which manages the company\u2019s over-the-counter store brand products.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000m3b6mt38x1qnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And in October, the Biden administration proposed a new rule that would require private insurance plans to cover over-the-counter contraception without a prescription at no cost.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000n3b6mt0jvz3ay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But there are also threats.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000o3b6mzi3ukwac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Title X is a federal program that helps provide funding for family planning and other preventative health care services. Regulations issued by the Trump administration in 2019 \u2013 aimed at separating abortion and family planning services \u2013 slashed the number of clinics eligible to participate and the number of people the program reached.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm4j34n0900113b6mcig6yhxz@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Friday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000p3b6mqbcjc3ha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A recent analysis from KFF suggests that the program still hasn\u2019t recovered since the Biden administration reversed the Trump-era regulations \u2013 at least 1.1 million fewer people were served by Title X in 2023 than before the regulations took effect \u2013 and the program remains vulnerable to more regulation under a second Trump term.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000q3b6m7fftzbof@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe know that we\u2019re still under surveillance in a lot of the same ways as we were when we were an abortion clinic,\u201d Marty said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4j331t6000r3b6m6df02gdl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But she\u2019s proud of the way her clinic has been able to build trust in the community: It now serves more than a thousand people each month, up from just a couple dozen when it made the change about two years ago.
