It was first reported in the New York Times.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4hmzkex00053b6m0a3zgbct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The letter \u2013 signed by 77 laureates in chemistry, economics, medicine and physics \u2013 cites Kennedy\u2019s opposition to vaccines, his criticism of the fluoridation of drinking water, his promotion of AIDS conspiracy theories and his criticism of HHS agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US National Institutes of Health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4hmzkex00063b6makygrgw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe leader of DHHS should continue to nurture and improve \u2013 not threaten \u2013 these important and highly respected institutions and their employees,\u201d the letter says. \u201cIn view of his record, placing Mr. Kennedy in charge of DHHS would put the public\u2019s health in jeopardy and undermine America\u2019s global leadership in the health sciences, in both the public and commercial sectors.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4hmz9dy00003b6mhvk50zoa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            President-elect Donald Trump\u2019s transition team did not respond to a request for comment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4hmzkex00073b6mhat5a5b1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy has been one of the nation\u2019s most prominent anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists for years and has frequently spread falsehoods about the safety and efficacy of vaccines. Instead, he has said, it comes from wearing down the immune system with drug use, which is not true.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4hmzkex00093b6mj4p9qdlm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Additionally, Kennedy has floated significant employee turnover at the nation\u2019s public health agencies. He said in an interview with MSNBC that he would cut workers in \u201cthe nutrition departments\u201d at the FDA, and he proposed replacing 600 officials at the NIH with hand-picked staff.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4hmzkex000a3b6md8ggtiq1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A physician advocacy group called the Committee to Protect Health Care has cited factors like these in its own letter urging senators to reject the nomination.
