She was 56.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300083b6maqy75udh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In her YouTube blog, she calls for more resources investing in lung cancer research, especially in women and nonsmokers. The blog was written in the weeks before her death, according to YouTube, which posted it with the permission of her family.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300093b6mk240meio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAt the end of 2022, I was diagnosed with lung cancer. I had almost no symptoms and was running a few miles a day at the time. I had never smoked so I was totally shocked with this diagnosis,\u201d Wojcicki wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000a3b6me89yakt6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHaving cancer hasn\u2019t been easy. As a person I have changed a lot, and probably the most important lesson I have learned is just to focus and enjoy the present,\u201d she wrote. \u201cLife is unpredictable for everyone, with many unknowns, but there is a lot of beauty in everyday life. My goals going forward are to enjoy the present as much as possible and fight for better understanding and cures for this disease.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000b3b6mmcl49hx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Wojcicki was not alone in her lung cancer journey.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3tagl3o000o3b6mvpcn54pw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A trend has emerged in the United States of more young and middle-age women being diagnosed with lung cancer at higher rates than men.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000u3b6mj46fvmss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And although cigarette smoking is the No. 1 risk factor for lung cancer, many of these young women being diagnosed have never smoked. It\u2019s estimated that about two-thirds of lung cancer cases in never-smokers are in women.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3t4sgcz00313b6md07pvhlw@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"it-was-very-shocking-totally-unexpected\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018It was very shocking \u2026 totally unexpected\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000c3b6msdzk0o9t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Jhalene Mundin, a 36-year-old nurse based in New Jersey, has never smoked, and her doctor described her as otherwise healthy, with no risk factors. Yet last year, the mother of two received the shock of her life.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000d3b6m2j6orljc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, an advanced stage of disease in which it had spread outside her lungs.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000e3b6mw0kkfy07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Her eyes still fill with tears when she thinks about that day.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000f3b6m9e78m3qw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI remember I was crying,\u201d Mundin said of her diagnosis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000g3b6mx8kk8e1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI thought it was maybe stage II or III. But when she said it was stage IV, I felt like the room was closing in on me. And I remember saying \u2018No, no,\u2019 because I was thinking about my kids,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like, \u2018No, I can\u2019t die yet, because I have two kids that I need to raise. They still need me.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000h3b6mll25krhj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Before Mundin\u2019s diagnosis, she had had a persistent cough that was getting worse \u2013 but she thought it may have been a lingering symptom from a case of Covid-19.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t6qan2000e3b6mwgtnuwtb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, she had an appointment on her calendar to get an X-ray of her hip due to hip pain.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000i3b6m6q29ihm6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMy friend, who is also my co-worker, she was like, \u2018You\u2019re already getting an X-ray of your hip. Why don\u2019t you get a chest X-ray?\u2019\u201d Mundin said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000j3b6m0dqhk80z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAnd so the doctor gave me a script for both,\u201d she said. \u201cThen the chest X-ray showed a big mass. The persistent cough was from the lung cancer.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000k3b6mv3slzvch@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most people with lung cancer don\u2019t have symptoms until the disease is advanced, but some common symptoms of lung cancer may include a persistent cough that gets worse or doesn\u2019t go away, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up blood, fatigue or weight loss.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3t4ef2i002i3b6m6isunkvr@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"lung-cancer-clearly-climbing-in-nonsmokers\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Lung cancer \u2018clearly\u2019 climbing in nonsmokers<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000z3b6my4qw9qwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Research suggests that lung cancer diagnoses have risen 84% among women in the US<strong> <\/strong>over the past 42 years while dropping 36% in men. Women who have never smoked are more than twice as likely as male never-smokers to get lung cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t5f9fg00363b6mkgdkseh9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cLung cancer is clearly increasing in never-smokers,\u201d said Dr. Helena Yu, a thoracic medical oncologist and early drug development specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who is treating Kara.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000w3b6mbip0lux0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo 20% of lung cancers that are diagnosed this year and more recently are in never-smokers \u2013 and that equates to like 40,000 cases a year,\u201d she said. \u201cThen 1 out of 5 people who die of lung cancer now are never-smokers, too. So we\u2019re seeing an increased diagnosis but also a death rate that\u2019s keeping up with that.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000x3b6mzjaqwhl6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She added that the youngest lung cancer patient she has treated was diagnosed at 26. That person also did not have a history of smoking.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300103b6m0fgarzws@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although it remains unclear what exactly is driving this rise in lung cancer among young women, Yu has some ideas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300113b6m6ubkrzhm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think that there are two ways or reasons that never-smokers get lung cancer. I think that there are exposure issues \u2013 which are like air pollution, asbestos, secondhand smoke, radon \u2013 and those are kind of rare and maybe make up a small portion,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then there are mutations that cause lung cancer, and we are also seeing a really significant increase in these mutations that cause lung cancer, and those are enriched in women.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300123b6mhxi5977n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mundin said her doctor was \u201c95% sure\u201d that a genetic mutation was<strong> <\/strong>behind her lung cancer diagnosis. She grew angry that she had never been told about this mutation, even though she is a nurse.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300133b6meo4odpxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf I had known, I would have been on top of it,\u201d she said. \u201cI was mad that no one was talking about it. That \u2013 why wasn\u2019t there a screening like colon cancer or breast cancer?\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300143b6mi4sx7p44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A mutation in the gene that codes for the epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, has been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. It is just one of several genetic mutations that are tied to an increased risk of the disease.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t6nh4m00093b6m5q6zfj8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The EGFR protein can help cells grow too much, which can cause cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300153b6mueea90dd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Like Mundin, 38-year-old Kara was diagnosed with EGFR lung cancer<strong> <\/strong>and said that, as a patient, she sees a considerable need for more research.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300163b6m98swnhhh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMy hope for the future is that there will be momentum around the EGFR and so that they can continue to research to find a cure, because it is impacting a lot of individuals that are healthy, and it\u2019s just kind of sideswiping us,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t9pyjo00003b6mwtju97xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kara began noticing pain in her right arm and shoulder in February. Eventually, an MRI revealed a roughly 6-inch malignant tumor in her arm, she said, and she had reconstructive surgery because the tumor grew extremely large.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000n3b6md0238hr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But doctors determined that the cancer did not originate in Kara\u2019s arm, and they raced to find its origin. In June, Kara was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. She had no history of smoking and no risk factors and was otherwise healthy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000p3b6m7o25ygyo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With help from her care team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she has been able to continue living an otherwise normal life while undergoing treatment, she says. She leans on her friends, boyfriend, family and faith.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000q3b6m1j1a944m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI\u2019m living my life normally. I run marathons, and I\u2019m still able to do that,\u201d Kara said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3000r3b6mwp74lem9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI ran the Chicago Marathon in October,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m still traveling. I\u2019m still spending time with my family. I feel great. I don\u2019t feel sick, so I\u2019m very blessed to feel good and have such great quality of life.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300193b6mo2no8734@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Research suggests that EGFR mutations are more prevalent among tumors from women than from men, appearing in about 59% of tumors from women versus 26% of tumors from men.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300173b6mg2hrcxof@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some studies also suggest that EGFR mutations occur at a significantly higher frequency in tumors among East Asians compared with non-Asian people, appearing in one study in about 30% of tumors from East Asians versus 8% of tumors from non-Asians.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001a3b6mqzzy8tso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere are certain mutations like EGFR that are more common in Asian women,\u201d Yu said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay300183b6mz40kb5e7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mundin said she \u201cbasically fit the bill,\u201d as she is young and Asian and has never smoked.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t63yed00013b6mxv1rf01v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She later connected with two friends in her social circle who also were diagnosed with lung cancer associated with a genetic mutation. They both also are Asian, she said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3t4ajdg002b3b6msv581myj@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"an-urgent-call-for-more-research\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        An urgent call for more research<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001b3b6mp6yhmcwo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Alexander Drilon, who has been treating Mundin for lung cancer, said he treats many people whose cancers have targets, such as EGFR mutations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001c3b6mf1ld7f35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThese patients tend to be, like Jhalene, younger at diagnosis compared to patients who get smoking-related lung cancers, and many of them are women,\u201d Drilon, a thoracic medical oncologist and early drug development specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, wrote in an email.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001d3b6myeifg0ne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn the earliest stages of our learning about the EGFR target, young women who never smoked was a demographic that was strongly associated with EGFR+ lung cancer,\u201d Drilon said, adding that there are also many lung cancers that have other targets that are diagnosed in young women who never smoked.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001e3b6mig53jbpm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhile I am not surprised that this trend has been observed in lung cancers with targets, it still remains a mystery as to why these cancers develop in young women,\u201d he said. \u201cScientists in the field have hypothesized the potential contribution of environmental factors or genetics, but this far, no one has made an extremely strong connection with one particular factor.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001f3b6mpcctdodq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lung cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, but Drilon said that many of the cancers associated with genetic mutations can also be treated with targeted therapies, drugs that target genetic mutations found in a tumor to block the growth and spread of cancer cells.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001g3b6migboh1xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBecause of these new therapies, patients that receive them may survive for much longer than those that do not,\u201d Drilon said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001h3b6migafrh3u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This ongoing mystery around the biological differences in lung cancer has led some lawmakers to call for more research into these differences.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001i3b6morwf74i3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last year, US representatives introduced the Women and Lung Cancer Research and Preventative Services Act, which aims to commission more lung cancer research and would require the US Department of Health and Human Services to conduct an interagency review of the status of lung cancer in women, including identifying new opportunities for screening, diagnosis and treatment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001j3b6m8ofxvisd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Historically, women were not represented in some large lung cancer studies, and before 1993, many clinical trials omitted women.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001k3b6mth0wos3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US, but it appears to be among the least-funded of the major cancers in terms of research dollars, suggesting that lung cancer research is underfunded relative to its burden on society. In 2019, only 15% of the National Institutes of Health\u2019s $267 million lung cancer budget went to women-focused research, according to the nonprofit Women\u2019s Health Access Matters. Yet lung cancer kills more women in the US than breast, ovarian and cervical cancer combined.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3t7albo00013b6metjtm3v0@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-lot-of-us-were-diagnosed-very-late\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018A lot of us were diagnosed \u2026 very late\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001l3b6m64o8mgfr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lung cancer is so deadly in part because it\u2019s often diagnosed late, when it\u2019s harder to treat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001n3b6ms3bkrolg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mundin said that she hopes more awareness is raised around this increase in lung cancer among young women and that it leads to the development of targeted screening, such as for people with a genetic mutation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001y3b6mm6qvtxx7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She hopes there is greater understanding around how to diagnose some of these lung cancer cases early \u2013 especially for her two young children, and their future.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001p3b6m8la29czh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The only recommended screening test for lung cancer in the US is a low-dose computed tomography or CT scan. The US Preventive Services Task Force, a group of independent medical experts whose recommendations help guide doctors\u2019 decisions and influence insurance plans, has similar recommendations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001x3b6mwdxibbvk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut we have a lot of patients who never smoked,\u201d Mundin said. \u201cA lot of us were diagnosed at stage IV, which is already late, very late.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001q3b6mhy91x5en@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, there have been efforts internationally to identify never-smokers who may benefit from screening, Yu said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001r3b6m8wiv4gor@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of these studies, the TALENT study, conducted in Taiwan, enrolled about 12,000 people who didn\u2019t have a history of smoking and gave each low-dose CT scans.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3t45ay3001s3b6m840qql9q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey found lung cancers in about 2.5%,\u201d said Yu, who was not involved in the research.
