Here\u2019s what to know about symptoms and how it spreads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p64mle0000356mbk8ukf66@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Melinda Pratt\u2019s Monday began like any other: waking up the kids, turning on the TV and making her morning coffee.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p64tn70002356mcqs93q81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI had it on my news channel, and I heard the carrots thing, and I leaned to look at the TV, and the Bunny-Luv carrots were on the screen,\u201d she said. \u201cI stopped everything then, and I went straight to my refrigerator and saw that I had those carrots.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ndn9qg002j2cp9d79pbn3g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            An E. coli outbreak connected to bagged organic carrots sold under several brand names, including Bunny-Luv and the store brands for Kroger, Publix, Target, Trader Joe\u2019s, Walmart, Wegmans and Whole Foods, has led to one death and over a dozen hospitalizations, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onaw970000356maj15gddg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Anyone who purchased the carrots is urged to avoid eating them. Instead, throw them away and wash any item or surface that might have come into contact with them using hot, soapy water.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p9db2n00003b5vxmtfingg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pratt filed a lawsuit in the Kern County Superior Court in California against carrot producer Grimmway Farms on Monday, claiming that she tested positive for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. Grimmway Farms declined to comment on the pending litigation.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3oo2xab00013b5vvwjsibm1@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-is-e-coli\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What is E. coli?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onuht5000a356m1tpcsh53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The type of bacteria involved in this outbreak is E. coli O121:H19, a strain of dangerous Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which has been linked to ground beef, romaine lettuce and water in the past, the CDC says. Shiga toxin can penetrate and kill cells, causing tissue damage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onukwz000d356mbbhgn1tz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although most kinds of E. coli are harmless and can help with food digestion, others can cause health problems like urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis and serious kidney problems like hemolytic uremic syndrome.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3oo3m7m00043b5v8ns72k4v@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-do-you-get-e-coli\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How do you get E. coli?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onuxha000j356m1fuu39pm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People typically get E. coli by consuming food or water that is contaminated with infected animal feces or through<strong> <\/strong>contact with feces from a person who\u2019s infected.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onv86j000m356mmrhajqky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Research has showed that about half of organic food outbreaks are linked to produce and that may be due to farming methods.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onvdn5000p356mlantk6r1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In order for agricultural products like fruits and vegetables to be certified organic by the US Department of Agriculture, farmers and growers need to avoid using prohibited substances, such as synthetic ingredients, when managing pests, weeds, disease and soil.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onvt9f000s356motzfsdj3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn general, organic farms have less oversight than large, traditional-type farms,\u201d said Dr.<strong> <\/strong>Nicole Iovine, an infectious disease specialist and chief hospital epidemiologist at the University of Florida Health. \u201cOrganic farms are more likely to use compost or manure rather than commercially bought fertilizers. If the compost is not properly processed such that pathogens naturally present in animal stool survive, the soil will become contaminated.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3oocnc2000a3b5vi855agmq@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-are-the-symptoms-of-e-coli-infection\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What are the symptoms of E. coli infection?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p659d60005356m27l19l4i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pratt<strong> <\/strong>remembers buying Bunny-Luv carrots, her go-to snack, on September 30.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p666400008356mbi4jgooz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Around October 10, she says, she started having stomach problems, including light diarrhea with bloody mucus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p66juq000e356mglx145s0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cEvery day, it just progressed worse, and it just wouldn\u2019t stop,\u201d Pratt said. \u201cIt went from having diarrhea from a few times a day, which was manageable, even stomach flu manageable, to upwards to about 10 to 15 times in one day.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onwp7e000y356mqr259tm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The tricky part, Iovine says, is that most of the symptoms associated with E. coli infection \u2013 such as vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps \u2013 are also common with<s> <\/s>other foodborne illnesses, so it can be difficult to tell if you have an E. coli infection.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onwx7g0011356mrq0d8vxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Symptoms usually start around three to four days after consuming the bacteria. Young children and older adults are more vulnerable to severe infections.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3p67nhn000j356mmbosud3y@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-is-e-coli-infection-treated\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How is E. coli infection treated?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onx1980014356m94fq6xv8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMost infections resolve on their own,\u201d said Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University. She previously was Baltimore\u2019s health commissioner, with responsibilities that included overseeing food safety. \u201cPatients need supportive treatment with hydration but do not need specific therapy. Some benefit from antibiotics. Then there are some infections, notably O157:H7, where antibiotics are not used and in fact could worsen illness.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onx88s0017356mqry0yo1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People who have severe stomach cramps or bloody diarrhea or who are unable to keep down fluids should seek medical attention, Wen said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p66srj000h356m9fioa7e2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pratt\u2019s symptoms became too much to manage at home on October 21.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p68694000m356m51aqwbhl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI couldn\u2019t handle it anymore,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t handle taking care of it at home anymore and watching my kids and my husband watch me. So I went to the hospital.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p68abx000p356mv97n4qee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pratt was in the hospital for three days. She says she received nausea medications and pain medications.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p68vk7000s356mtwfegxxf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI didn\u2019t stay still the entire time I was there because I was so uncomfortable with pain,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just an awful experience.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3oodizb000d3b5v1ezk5boo@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-to-prevent-e-coli-infection\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How to prevent E. coli infection<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onxtis001i356m57iogakj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Iovine says the best way to avoid E. coli infections is to stick with the CDC\u2019s recommendations: Wash your hands frequently, follow safe food preparation guidelines, and wash fruits and<strong> <\/strong>vegetables before eating them, even if the package says they are already washed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3onxpby001g356mdwnejyv2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDon\u2019t ever trust that [label]. Always wash your vegetables,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s the last opportunity to remove any harmful bacteria that may be present. I\u2019m really aware of things that grow in the dirt. I will rinse them, and then I remove whatever the outer layer is. If it\u2019s an onion, I remove that outer layer. If it\u2019s carrots, I always peel them, because you can\u2019t get all the dirt off.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p6925t000v356mquxs6azh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When Pratt saw the news report about the outbreak, she dropped everything and began cleaning out her fridge.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p69eph000y356mt75wxe38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI went ahead and dumped all of my other food that I actually had in the bin with them,\u201d she said. \u201cI just dumped it. Brand new and all. I just didn\u2019t want to take that chance. I literally bleached and soaked everything that they touched.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ony1q0001m356mawyxey4p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC also encourages drinking only water from safe sources. When you\u2019re hiking, camping or traveling, make sure water is purified before consuming it.
