{"id":1626,"date":"2024-11-13T11:51:36","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T11:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/13\/morning-after-pill-sales-surge-online-telehealth-companies-say-as-women-prepare-for-second-trump-term\/"},"modified":"2024-11-13T11:51:36","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T11:51:36","slug":"morning-after-pill-sales-surge-online-telehealth-companies-say-as-women-prepare-for-second-trump-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/13\/morning-after-pill-sales-surge-online-telehealth-companies-say-as-women-prepare-for-second-trump-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning-after pill sales surge online, telehealth companies say, as women prepare for second Trump term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d6r9zg003p2cp241qv2wsp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Online sales of emergency contraceptives, like the morning-after pill Plan B, have skyrocketed in the United States in the past week \u2013 days after Donald Trump won the US presidential election, according to retailers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk00063b6mgtjkrfcf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The surge in sales suggests that women are concerned about how a forthcoming Trump administration could restrict their access to emergency contraception, and they are preparing now, said Monica Cepak, CEO of the sexual and reproductive telehealth company Wisp.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk00073b6m0cf8n2bx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At Wisp, which offers two types of emergency contraception online, sales of those medications went up about 1,000% in just one day after Tuesday\u2019s election.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk00083b6mk0dkyuvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe are seeing women actually stockpile emergency contraception pills,\u201d Cepak said. \u201cWe actually recently launched multipacks of Plan B, and this was the driver of a lot of the increase in orders that we saw. About 90% of emergency contraception orders are those multipacks.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000b3b6mpnk312r8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At startup Winx Health, a sexual and vaginal health company, sales of its morning-after pill Restart were up 315% on the day after the election compared with the 24 hours before the election. That means seven times more doses of Restart were sold on the day after the election than in the entire week prior, according to the company.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000c3b6m65ov682e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThings skyrocketed immediately,\u201d said Cynthia Plotch, co-founder of Winx Health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000d3b6mxpusbq1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As of Friday, sales of the product had climbed 966% from the three days before the election, she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000e3b6m46m536hh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re seeing the majority of these sales come from our multipack. So it\u2019s not that women are buying a single product. They\u2019re stockpiling to have them on hand for themselves, for their friends, for their sisters,\u201d Plotch said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000f3b6mchwubx3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSomething that I am taking away from this experience is that women are smart. Women are savvy. We didn\u2019t make our bodies political. They were made to be political pawns, and now we\u2019re learning how to take back that control,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that is why we are seeing the trends that we are seeing.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000g3b6mpgnr3vdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Winx Health has also seen increased interest in its community-funded Restart Donation Bank program, which allows anybody who needs access to the Restart morning-after pill to request it online and receive it free.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000i3b6mglztpdez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe are a women-owned, women-led company that represents a community of women. It is our duty to continue to fight. That\u2019s what\u2019s next for us,\u201d Plotch said. \u201cIn a Trump administration, our work \u2013 not just at Winx, but our work as a community \u2013 is around protecting access and increasing education.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000k3b6mw8krla6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Emergency contraception, such as the morning-after pill, is a method of birth control that can prevent pregnancy after someone has sex. It\u2019s not the same as abortion, which uses different types of medications. Morning-after pills work only if the user is not already pregnant, whereas abortion is the termination of a pregnancy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000l3b6m44wf7nyo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When women live in states with increased regulation around abortion, \u201cthey think that they also don\u2019t have access to this product too,\u201d Plotch said of emergency contraception.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000m3b6msqz9r270@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some physicians have reported an increase in patients asking not only about their options for these types of emergency contraception but about long-acting contraception like intrauterine devices, or IUDs. Some of these patients are specifically asking to receive either medications or procedures before Trump is sworn into office in January.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000n3b6mzcmylcxy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Thursday, two days after the election, \u201cI had four requests from patients for either permanent sterilization or an IUD, and all four of them were saying, \u2018Can I please get this done before inauguration?\u2019 \u201d said Dr. Clayton Alfonso, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Duke Health in North Carolina and member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000o3b6meu41u1r7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI also had a pediatrician colleague of mine contact me and say, \u2018Hey, I have an 18-year-old who is in a panic trying to get an IUD before end of year. Can you help get her in?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cSitting in clinic, another colleague of mine said, \u2018I\u2019ve already seen two requests for permanent sterilization just since the results Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.\u2019 \u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000p3b6mkfbo2b6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alfonso said he and his colleagues saw a slight bump in these types of requests after the US Supreme Court\u2019s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion in 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000q3b6m06hghwlj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the new requests feel more \u201cdire,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing these patients, in my mind, rightfully scared as to what is going to happen.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000s3b6mvf7ogzz2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some of the concerns around what the reproductive health care landscape could look like under a second Trump presidency stem from what has been outlined in Project 2025, a conservative blueprint that was organized by think tank The Heritage Foundation for the next Republican president to consider.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm3d7bi5v00103b6mpo8dv5xs@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Friday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000t3b6m5benqofa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Based on what has been outlined in that agenda, reproductive health care experts are concerned about the ways in which a second Trump presidency could decimate access to not just abortion care but maternal health care, fertility care and contraception.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000u3b6mlvwf58ri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat\u2019s important to recognize is that all of those are interrelated,\u201d said Amy Friedrich-Karnik, director of federal policy at the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy organization focused on sexual and reproductive health that supports abortion rights.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000v3b6m9wrlmou8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There are concerns that the Trump administration may spread misinformation around reproductive health care, defund programs and clinics that provide contraception or use the Comstock Act, a Reconstruction-era federal law that prohibits the mailing of \u201cobscenities,\u201d to ban the mailing of medication abortion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000w3b6m4od5tlh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen you attack one piece of reproductive health care, it really has a ripple effect,\u201d Friedrich-Karnik said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3d722zk000x3b6m53fowrv3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPeople who need abortion care often also at some point need contraception, and people who need contraception might eventually need maternal health care,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople\u2019s lives are fluid like that, and this care is fluid, and you can\u2019t attack one piece of reproductive health care without really impacting the whole range of care that people need.\u201d    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Online sales of emergency contraceptives, like the morning-after pill Plan B, have skyrocketed in the United States in the past week \u2013 days after Donald Trump won the US presidential election, according to retailers.
