It can take one to three weeks to develop symptoms, such as cough and chest pain, headache and tiredness. The illness can linger for at least a month.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv2800083b5vi1aq6ki5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In rare cases, the infection can spread from the lungs to the brain and spinal cord, the skin or the bones and joints, the CDC said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv2800093b5vry0vjaml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Health-care providers can&nbsp;test for the disease&nbsp;through a blood sample or a skin test.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv28000a3b5vm0vf6fcf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The number of infections is growing in California, with at least 9,000 cases reported across the state in 2023 and more than 5,000 preliminary cases reported so far in 2024 as of July 1, the state health department said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv28000b3b5vi5zozfye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than a dozen cases of Valley fever were reported among people who attended or worked at the Lightning in a Bottle music festival in Kern County in May. There were 19 people who got Valley fever and eight people were hospitalized, according to the California Department of Public Health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv28000c3b5vv6p0ehg6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPossible causes of this recent increase include winter rains after several years of drought, an increase in soil disturbance activities (including construction) in high-risk areas, and increased disease recognition, testing and reporting. In addition, while most cases of Valley fever in California are reported from the Central Valley and Central Coast regions, cases have been increasing outside of these regions, including in the northern Central Valley and in southern California,\u201d the health department said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv28000d3b5v17x7aznp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A recent study published in the journal&nbsp;The Lancet Regional Health, The Americas&nbsp;suggests that climate change may drive case rates and the seasonal patterns of infection.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv28000e3b5vqs9fdvxy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers examined cases of Valley fever in 17 California counties between 2000 and 2021 and noted that exposure to the fungus is highest between July and September and lowest between February and April based on when cases increased in the weeks that followed exposure.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm0r5r2m4000n3b5v79vh6z3r@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__standard\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0r5qv28000f3b5vgktgnmdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cCalifornia has a distinct dry season (April\u2013October) and wet season (November\u2013March) each year, and our results show that coccidioidomycosis seasonal peaks occur most often at the end of the dry season.
