Most have been in South America, but infections are also spreading in countries where it hasn\u2019t been seen before, and dozens of travel-related cases have been reported in the United States and Europe.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k00083b6kagtdmepm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Pan American Health Organization, a regional arm of the World Health Organization, has issued an epidemiological alert for Oropouche virus and raised the public health risk level to \u201chigh\u201d for the Americas region.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k00093b6k47ozvtcg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAlthough the disease has historically been described as mild, the geographic spread in transmission and the detection of more severe cases underscore the need for increased surveillance and characterization of possible more severe manifestations,\u201d the agency said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000a3b6kahykb0iw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also issued a health advisory warning health care providers and public health authorities to be on the lookout for new cases and recommending that pregnant women avoid travel to affected areas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0cs8qyd00092e6atuinng9r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At least 21 US travelers returning from Cuba have tested positive for Oropouche virus, the CDC said Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000b3b6k4bizpdvm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here\u2019s what to know about the emerging threat.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm073l5bm00093b6kcg46kw7r@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-is-oropouche-virus\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What is Oropouche virus?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000d3b6k8b0ww5v4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Oropouche virus gets its name from the village in Trinidad and Tobago where it was discovered in 1955. Since then, about 500,000 cases have been recorded. But knowledge of the disease is limited, with The Lancet medical journal even calling it a \u201cmysterious threat\u201d in a recent editorial.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000e3b6kwuelf99k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            About 60% of people who are infected develop symptoms, according to the CDC. These can appear similarly to those caused by dengue or Zika, including sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and joint stiffness. Other symptoms can include eye pain, light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and rash. In rare cases, the disease can infect the nervous system and cause meningitis and encephalitis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000f3b6kem5zqsre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Oropouche virus comes from a different viral family than Zika, but it raises many of the same concerns \u2013 and similar unknowns.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000g3b6k3ii0axr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is a great example for us to think about what it was like when we saw Zika being introduced into this country,\u201d said Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000h3b6ks9xztfba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe don\u2019t fully understand its life cycle and its transmission cycle, and it does look like it impacts pregnant people,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is exactly why we really need to learn more.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm073kvhx00063b6kq6bdn4lu@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-does-it-spread\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How does it spread?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000j3b6kzupuvvkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The virus spreads to people through insect bites, especially from biting midges, a type of tiny fly, and certain types of mosquitoes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000k3b6krporhogw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It is endemic to the Amazon basin region of South America, particularly in forested areas where transmission is maintained in a cycle between insects and other hosts such as rodents, sloths and birds. It\u2019s sometimes called \u201csloth fever.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0csj8ba00013b6linf1drbm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People who visit these areas can be bitten by an infected insect and carry the disease back to more urban areas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000l3b6kt34d4fbx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Climate change and deforestation create more opportunities for people to interact with infected insects and the raise the risk of spread, according the Pan American Health Organization.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000m3b6k354gjxxy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The current outbreak is spreading rapidly in countries where the virus is known to circulate and in new places. Locally acquired cases have been reported in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Peru. There is no evidence of local transmission in the United States, but several cases have been reported in people who have traveled to places where it is spreading.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000n3b6kt121jtup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The current risk of sustained local transmission in the continental United States is believed to be low, said Dr. Erin Staples, a medical epidemiologist with the CDC\u2019s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases. But the risk level is more uncertain in places like Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands that could have similar ecologies to Cuba, she said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm073kk0700033b6kbxu2a4zx@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"whats-happening-now\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What\u2019s happening now?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000p3b6kjy605422@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Shifts in the geography of the virus spread suggest that there may be new vectors involved in the cycle, experts say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000q3b6ky727sgvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe do need to get a little bit more information so we can better reflect areas that might be at risk for it,\u201d Staples said. \u201cWe\u2019re still learning about this virus, and we will be providing updates as soon as we have them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000r3b6k4be7bnyh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This year also marks the first time that there have been deaths reported from Oropouche virus and evidence that the disease can be transmitted from a pregnant woman to her fetus and cause adverse birth outcomes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000s3b6kc0pjc83a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Earlier this year, Brazil reported deaths in two young women who were otherwise healthy and not pregnant. A third fatal case in a middle-age man is under investigation, according to the Pan American Health Organization.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000t3b6kk7rbfmpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There have also been at least five cases in pregnant people that have led to fetal death or congenital abnormalities including microcephaly, a rare birth defect that results in an underdeveloped brain.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000u3b6kx0wk1tmp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some of these severe outcomes may be the result of more virus circulating, Staples said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000v3b6knikr309b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs we see more people becoming infected, we can see rare and unusual occurrences of clinical symptoms or death,\u201d she said. \u201cBut these are all things that CDC is currently working with our partners to learn more about.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm073k74s00003b6k4srno12w@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-can-people-protect-themselves\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How can people protect themselves?<\/h2>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm073liho000c3b6ktldspxiz@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__standard\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000x3b6ktu9hfoyh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There is no vaccine to protect against Oropouche virus, and there are no specific antiviral treatments available. Cases can be confirmed through laboratory testing, but it is not available at commercial diagnostic laboratories, and more common viruses like dengue often have to be ruled out first.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000y3b6kxxl0du2b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is a good time to think about mosquito bite prevention: Avoid going out at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most likely to be biting; dress appropriately to protect your skin from bites from mosquitoes and other insects, and to use a mosquito repellent that is effective at preventing infections,\u201d Hamilton said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k000z3b6kdvltq0ty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC has issued two travel advisories, one encouraging travelers to South America to take \u201cusual precautions\u201d and another suggesting that travelers to Cuba take \u201cenhanced precautions\u201d in protecting themselves from bug bites and seeking medical care when necessary.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm070of7k00103b6k4cdnoion@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And pregnant women should take special precautions, experts say; the CDC recommends that pregnant people reconsider nonessential travel to Cuba.    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little-known disease spread by insect bites has turned deadly, and health officials are sounding the alarm.
