{"id":1301,"date":"2024-08-28T11:53:04","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T11:53:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/28\/heat-related-deaths-spiked-117-in-the-us-since-1999\/"},"modified":"2024-08-28T11:53:04","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T11:53:04","slug":"heat-related-deaths-spiked-117-in-the-us-since-1999","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/28\/heat-related-deaths-spiked-117-in-the-us-since-1999\/","title":{"rendered":"Heat-related deaths spiked 117% in the US since 1999"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076frux000vqtqmbxpq8l6p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As temperatures reach record levels in many parts of the US this week, emergency rooms are bracing for a new normal: More patients are becoming gravely ill because their bodies can\u2019t take the heat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0afnxiy00003b6lsdrdnmqa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Heat-related deaths in the US have been steadily increasing for years, a new study published in the medical journal JAMA shows \u2014 a 117% increase in heat-related deaths from 1999 to 2023, with at least 21,518 people dying in that period.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0b1t8ov00013b6m0eiy8ggy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Using data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers&nbsp;found the annual&nbsp;number of deaths&nbsp;varied from year to year before 2016, with spikes in 2006 and 2011. But after 2016, the study found a steady increase. On average, heat-related deaths decreased by 1.4% from 1999 to 2016, then increased by 16.8% each year from 2016 to 2023.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm0ay4j8r00003b6kbuid8wax@published\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-72s5l\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0b22ri400083b6m4e988vto@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The authors say heat-related deaths are probably undercounted.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8t0006336ktkvgep76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe way that death certificates are filled out, the people that are filling them out don\u2019t always know the full circumstances that led to the death. So we\u2019re only probably scratching the surface of it,\u201d said study co-author Dr. Jeffrey Howard, an associate professor of public health at the University of Texas at San Antonio. \u201cThe fact that you see this trend tells me that there\u2019s probably many more deaths that are we just are unable to measure.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8t0007336kunzpnczo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Unlike a clear-cut cause of death such as a car crash, deaths from heat can be harder to identify.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8t0008336kg8uavqou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But awareness of global warming\u2019s threat to human health is increasing among some physicians,&nbsp;said Dr. Catharina Giudice,&nbsp;an emergency physician and climate change and human health fellow at Harvard University&nbsp;who was not involved in the study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8t0009336khylwsuxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen you\u2019re filling out a death certificate, you make your best interpretation with the available information you have, and I think the more people are aware of climate change-related mortality,\u201d Giudice said. \u201cSo there may be some bias of increasing awareness over time\u201d&nbsp;contributing to the recent trend,&nbsp;she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8u000a336klrzi1fil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And more people will probably continue needing emergency care for heat exposure. By the end of this century, more than half of the global population is projected to be exposed to weeks of dangerous heat every year, according to a 2022 study. This makes even common activities like taking a hike in the Grand Canyon, going for a run in gym class or even just sitting on the couch without air conditioning potentially deadly.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8u000b336kaexy1zhr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Extreme heat is the No. 1&nbsp;weather-related killer in the US, according to the World Meteorological Organization, but experts say it\u2019s a phenomenon that often goes under the radar. Unlike with a hurricane, there are usually no dramatic pictures to remind people about the dangers of heat.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm0aftffl00013b6lhaz6b417@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-heat-kills\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How heat kills<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8u000c336k480iunxc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Heat can kill in at least 17 different ways, many related to heart and breathing problems. Some groups of people are more vulnerable to its effects, including small children and the elderly, whose bodies don\u2019t regulate temperature as well, along with people with certain underlying medical conditions and people who have overweight or obesity.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm076i6j1000s336kcb6t9iyt@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__standard\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076yhr700023b6l7rnxg4jw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Heat-related deaths may also include suicide, drowning and homicide, phenomena that could not be captured by this study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8u000d336k6xoglqwr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Howard hopes that studies like this can bring more awareness of the issue, prompting more steps to avoid what are ultimately preventable deaths.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm076fz8u000e336koccwd9c1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think this should be a real wake-up call to say \u2018this really does warrant more attention,\u2019 especially in areas of high risk,\u201d Howard said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0782r1w00003b6lnhsupk9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Public health experts have recommended that governments invest in infrastructure that can help lower temperatures, like planting shade trees and installing covered bus stops.
