{"id":1279,"date":"2024-08-17T11:39:57","date_gmt":"2024-08-17T11:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/17\/the-us-is-experiencing-its-largest-summer-covid-wave-in-at-least-two-years\/"},"modified":"2024-08-17T11:39:57","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T11:39:57","slug":"the-us-is-experiencing-its-largest-summer-covid-wave-in-at-least-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/retirednurseblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/17\/the-us-is-experiencing-its-largest-summer-covid-wave-in-at-least-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"The US is experiencing its largest summer Covid wave in at least two years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxycat000me0pb25q75osh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It may be time to dust off the face masks and air purifiers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi00052e6au8tfeyhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US is in the midst of a significant Covid-19 wave, and when the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updates its&nbsp;wastewater dashboard&nbsp;on Friday, experts expect it to confirm that viral activity levels are the highest they\u2019ve been during a summer surge since the CDC began publicly tracking&nbsp;such data&nbsp;in January 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzwn96rp00022e6aw62548rd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As of August 3, the CDC\u2019s measure of<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>national Covid viral activity in wastewater is at 9.01 and rising &#8211; just shy of the peak at 9.28 in July 2022.&nbsp;Before it started rising again in May, it was at 1.36.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi00072e6alawhcask@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cCurrently, the COVID-19 wastewater viral activity level is very high nationally, with the highest levels in the Western US region,\u201d&nbsp;Dr. Jonathan Yoder, deputy director of the&nbsp;CDC\u2019s&nbsp;Wastewater Surveillance Program, said in an email.&nbsp;\u201cThis year\u2019s COVID-19 wave is coming earlier than last year, which occurred in late August\/early September.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi00082e6avo1sz1pl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths are also ticking up, although not to the same extent as infections, according to the CDC\u2019s&nbsp;Covid dashboard.&nbsp;As of the end of July, the CDC\u2019s dashboard shows about 4<strong> <\/strong>are being hospitalized for Covid for every 100,000 people&nbsp;in a given area, up from a low in May of about one Covid hospitalization for every 100,000 people&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;the lowest level since the pandemic began.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi00092e6akur7qmjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC\u2019s wastewater data closely aligns with&nbsp;what they\u2019re seeing&nbsp;at the nationwide WastewaterScan network, too.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi000a2e6asdy5ahzg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is a very significant surge. The levels are very high. They\u2019re the highest we\u2019ve ever seen during a summer wave,\u201d said Dr. Marlene Wolfe, an assistant professor of environmental health and public health at Emory University and a program director for WastewaterScan. \u201cWe\u2019re detecting SARS-CoV-2 in 100 percent of our samples across the country right now.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi000b2e6a1dfthptu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Health officials no longer track the coronavirus as closely as they did during the public health emergency, and there are no longer reliable estimates of daily or weekly new infections in the US. Instead, the nation is largely relying on wastewater levels to follow numbers of new cases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi000c2e6aiojjd84a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Wolfe says the amount of virus in wastewater doesn\u2019t precisely correlate to numbers of infections.  That\u2019s because there are a host of things that can influence how much virus is in wastewater \u2013 including how much water is flowing through the sewage system when sampling takes place, as well as how much virus people may be shedding with a given variant.  Despite these variables, she says sampling over time has shown there is a strong relationship between the number of people infected in a given area and the amount of virus in local wastewater.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi000d2e6ai822hfi9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe can\u2019t say exactly how many more cases that may be compared to previous years, because some of those changes might have happened in the virus in the areas that we\u2019re measuring,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi000e2e6afdi1rswx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The rise in cases is being driven by waning immunity in the population and a trio of new variants that have drifted enough from their parent virus, JN.1, to escape the ability of our antibodies to quickly neutralize them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdi000f2e6avhu11wkm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cases are also climbing just as children head back to classrooms in many parts of the US, giving the infection plenty of opportunity to spread.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000g2e6abv602cs4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s not clear when this surge will peak and start to taper off.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000h2e6akunnoeh8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHere in Houston, Texas,&nbsp;wastewater numbers are still high and not declining. They have reached a plateau at a high level for several weeks,\u201d said Dr. Peter Hotez, an infectious disease expert who is director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children\u2019s Hospital.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000i2e6alwxi0hxc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The surge of cases has also come ahead of the availability of an updated Covid-19 vaccine designed to better protect against the new variants, which could help slow the spread of the virus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000j2e6anwklud64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a bit disappointing that these are not available now,&nbsp;as Covid is surging,\u201d Hotez said.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clzvy1qws000q2e6ahhibgd6k@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__standard\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000k2e6aeyrztw39@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The&nbsp;US Food and Drug Administration&nbsp;has not yet approved the latest tweaks to the Covid-19 vaccines, but experts say they\u2019ve heard that updated&nbsp;shots&nbsp;from Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax should be ready in the coming weeks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzwmffz100002e6a5uyze469@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In June, the FDA, following its normal process of reevaluating the need for changes to the Covid vaccines, directed manufacturers to update their shots for the fall to better match the variants that were making people sick.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000l2e6aed6yre1e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe keep hearing rumors that it will be here by the end of September, so we shouldn\u2019t have to wait too long,\u201d said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000m2e6ab66fcpng@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The best thing people can do&nbsp;as far as&nbsp;their own personal risk is to get that vaccine when it does become available, Hotez said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzvxzvdj000n2e6a118dvyvx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNext, of course,&nbsp;is a good N95 or KN95 mask when you are in crowded indoor areas,\u201d Hotez said, and seek out the antiviral medication Paxlovid if you test positive.&nbsp;For that reason, it\u2019s also a good idea to stock up on Covid-19 tests&nbsp;to identify whether any coughs or runny noses are being caused by the coronavirus.    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It may be time to dust off the face masks and air purifiers.
