Her house survived the 2018 blaze, but her neighbors\u2019 homes didn\u2019t. Now there\u2019s another fire \u2013 the Park Fire, one of the largest in California history \u2013 and although it hasn\u2019t forced her to evacuate yet, she says she wakes up every hour to check.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0003336kq1tdaphq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s the not knowing,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zreuv00023b6lket5a5x7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sleepless, Patterson goes over lists of what she\u2019s packed in her go bag just in case she needs to run again \u2013 and she is not alone.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0004336kd47pwnqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA lot of friends have the same anxiety of past Camp Fire issues,\u201d Patterson said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0005336kgffryezk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Fires aren\u2019t just a physical threat to health and safety. Exposure can increase the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol and substance use disorders, and sleep problems, as well as mental health problems that could last years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0006336k0anqfpmk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The climate crisis continues to cause exponential growth of wildfires. Many more people must now deal with not just one fire but what seems like an annual string of them, and it\u2019s taking a toll on their<strong> <\/strong>sense of mental&nbsp;well-being.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0007336k8eqlbc0i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sonja Bigalke-Bannan, a licensed social worker who provides trauma therapy to people who survived the Maui wildfires, said clients are having a hard time processing their feelings about more recent  wildfires at the same time they\u2019re dealing with trauma from last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0008336kxugxhcy9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe try to manage and process trauma in the present. We seek safety and calmness as we process the past trauma, but when the body and the brain perceive the same patterns and messages that it is not safe in the present day, it can be extremely difficult to try to find safety and continue trauma recovery when we have similar conditions again,\u201d Bigalke-Bannan said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk0009336kc06ysnpg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As of Friday, 94 large wildfires rages across multiple states, and 28 had evacuation orders, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Fires are now burning in&nbsp;Oregon, California, Idaho, Washington, Utah, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada, Texas and Florida.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk000a336k37g9172c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Matthew Plotkin, director of equity and advocacy at United Way of Northern California, said he\u2019s heard from a steady stream of survivors being retraumatized by the current Park Fire.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk000b336kcdxiz768@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re seeing, sadly, numerous households that are now being impacted in repeat scenarios,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupk000c336kka2q9rhn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Friends who lost everything in the Camp Fire and built a home in another area in Butte County learned over the weekend that their new home was destroyed. A family he\u2019d been helping Monday had the same experience.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000d336ku0ok0edi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey\u2019re back at square one again,\u201d Plotkin said. \u201cIt takes a toll on a mental health level, for sure.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzbisu500000336k4uxnzi1v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A study of California residents published Friday said about half of the 24,000 Californians researchers spoke with had been affected by a climate event like a wildfire or flood, and of those, nearly 23% reported that their mental health was harmed. People in rural areas, like the ones Plotkin helps, were more likely to report that a climate event has had a negative impact on their mental health, in addition to people who were White, college-educated or female.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000e336ks4w0h9cr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Even people who help others, like Plotkin, aren\u2019t immune. When his wife called him in Washington last week to tell him about the Park Fire, he flashed back to all he was feeling during the Camp Fire, when he had to evacuate.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000f336k2vf219bw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cQuite honestly, our entire county probably has PTSD,\u201d Plotkin said with weak laugh.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000g336kt3whbph5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When people do have post-traumatic stress and it isn\u2019t well-managed, problems can become magnified.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000h336kqr868gcg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf people have lived through those experiences before, then with each subsequent year, there are just more triggers,\u201d said Dr. Steven Sugden, who works at the University of Utah Huntsman Mental Health Institute and is on the American Psychiatric Association\u2019s committee for disaster psychiatry.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000i336ks2e7d05d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sugden said it isn\u2019t just people who lose their homes who need help with wildfire-related mental health issues.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000j336kqwnhbe2k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe all inherit their smoke,\u201d he said, like last year, when fires in Canada turned New York\u2019s skies orange.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000k336k1xfpcb6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This wildfire season, he\u2019s noticed many more people on edge. \u201cThe whole country gets affected by fire season, and I think it\u2019s becoming more noticeable,\u201d Sugden said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000l336k10e6wkfg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Fortunately, Plotkin says that as wildfires have spread, mental health services have become more \u201centrenched\u201d in disaster recovery efforts than they were in 2018.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000m336k5fhjl61a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAnd I\u2019m grateful for that, especially in our more rural areas,\u201d Plotkin said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000n336k9lvkk598@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The challenge, Plotkin said, is the national shortage of licensed providers, especially in more rural areas like his. His organization is one of many trying to provide trauma-informed training to laypeople like clergy and trusted community leaders to help fill in some of the gaps.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000o336krig6gmgj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Having&nbsp;mental health experts and trained volunteers has been crucial to New Mexico\u2019s response to wildfires, says Nick Boukas, director of the New Mexico Health Care Authority Behavioral Health Services Division for the state.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz902wj700063b6lw44rmstr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Through the end of July, his group has had more than 1,000 behavioral health encounters with residents that are related to wildfires. The outreach effort includes vital help from the volunteer Medical Reserve Corps that includes certified peer support workers who help screen evacuees for mental health issues right away at shelters in addition to talking with them and listening to their concerns.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupl000p336kb2qjtgvd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs you can imagine, when there\u2019s wildfires, there\u2019s a lot of concern because there\u2019s severe uncertainty that goes into being displaced from your home,\u201d Boukas said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz904y2e00083b6lhudbo601@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s important to bring help to evacuees where they are, because they won\u2019t always seek it out on their own. \u201cTrying to be proactive and let people know that we\u2019re there to help support them from the behavioral health side but also what they might expect, because there was a lot of unknowns, and we have to make sure they are prepared for that,\u201d Boukas said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000r336kj15vgmfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s also been important to set up mental health stations for firefighters and other first responders, says Bobbie MacKenzie, the Medical Reserve Corps program manager with the New Mexico Department of Health\u2019s Bureau of Health Emergency Management.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000s336kot02nh9h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think a lot of times, they get overlooked in their communities, seeing their own home burned to the ground and still have to buckle up and get back out there and continue their firefighting for the rest of the neighborhood,\u201d Mackenzie said. Constantly seeing and listening to people\u2019s sad stories, like the first responders do, can \u201calso take a huge toll on somebody\u2019s mental health and well-being,\u201d she added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000t336kfoj6bsu0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mental health services may need to be continuous to be most effective, Boukas said. Unlike with a sprained ankle that can heal in a few months, mental health care can\u2019t just happen at shelters, \u201cso that you can get back to a spot where you feel more comfortable dealing with what you\u2019re dealing with,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000u336kdshde2wc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Wildfires can also have indirect effects on mental health, creating uncertainty around added expenses, insurance claims, rebuilding, loss of income and a potential loss of friends and community as some people move away. \u201cThis is a long-term thing,\u201d Boukas said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000v336kbmpf9dpr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s important that communities take care of each other too, experts said. It doesn\u2019t always have to be formal help that boosts someone\u2019s mental well-being. Friday\u2019s study found that people directly affected by climate events were much less likely to report negative mental health effects if they felt a sense of trust among their neighbors or if they themselves reported that they were willing to help their neighbors.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clz8zjg6b001f336kfuqnrtpn@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__standard\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000w336kc01bpolw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cChecking in within our support networks just to see how people are doing, whether it\u2019s related to all the fires or not, can really help people,\u201d Sugden said. \u201cWe\u2019re living in a time that\u2019s already very contentious, and I think many times, just all that other general noise makes things worse.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000x336kqsolfgow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Individuals can also build their own resilience.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz908kf7000b3b6l09y48gt4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For example, one aging wildfire survivor told Bigalke-Bannan that he worried his go bag was getting too heavy. She had him write down what was in it so he could literally and physically figure out how to lighten his burden. It\u2019s important to look at preparation for wildfires not from a \u201cfrightened lens,\u201d she said, but more from a \u201ctaking charge of some of the situation lens.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz8zbupm000y336kt7pry9vw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She\u2019s pleased that her work with survivors has helped them identify their growing anxiety as the anniversary of the Maui wildfires nears next week, but she says the work is ongoing.
